Obituary For Sarah Elisabeth Meilike

Sarah Elisabeth Meilike’s beautiful life was tragically cut short on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.

Sarah is survived by her husband Jon, her son Hawk, and their two cats, Artoo and Threepio. She is also survived by her parents Lori and Tim Wendt; her husband’s parents Cindy and Paul Meilike; her brother-in-law Nick, his wife Jessica with their children Ethan and Colin; and her maternal Grandparents Wilmer and Linda Gale. She is also survived by several aunts and uncles, cousins and dear friends, all of whom she referred to as “framily.”

Born October 11, 1984 in Illinois, she earned her associate's degree from Parkland College in Champaign and then went on to earn a BA in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

At 38, Sarah had just mastered a life lived truly as herself. Her colorful hair, often styled in a mohawk, shone almost as brightly as her smile.

Sarah was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. She had recently started a position at the Museum of Natural Sciences that brought her great joy.

Sarah was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and friend, her supportive nature consistently uplifting those around her. She and Jon had just celebrated 9 years of marriage and their life was filled with adventure as they promised each other in their vows, often with her planning the trips to include obscure stops such as old-time arcades. As a mother, she was patient, empathic, and incredibly fun. A gamer mom and nature lover, Sarah enjoyed taking Hawk on adventures to local parks and trails.

A champion of the marginalized, Sarah was especially passionate about supporting the LGBTQIA community and the disenfranchised. She was also thankful for the ability to be active at her son’s school. She will be sorely missed by children and adults alike at Smith Magnet Elementary.

Sarah thrived in her community at Common Thread Church. She valued her work with the teens in the church, and a Youth Memorial Fund has been set up to carry on her legacy.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 21, 2022 at 11:00 am at Common Thread Church, 2011 Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607. A Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:00 am. Live Streaming can be found on the Common Thread Church Facebook Page.

In Lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to the Sarah Meilike Youth Fund

Our deepest sympathy to Hawk, Jon, Lori, Tim and everyone else who loved Sarah. She was one of my all-time favorite students. More than being intelligent, she was energetic, funny and goofy. She had values that she did not hesitate in sharing or defending. She was genuine and honest in everything she did - truly a joy to be around.

I am shocked and incredibly saddened to hear this news. Sarah was one of my first and therefore oldest friends, and has always had a special place in my heart. From daycare, to sleepovers, to keeping in touch online, Sarah was always a true friend - one who never forgot my birthday, and who had a huge passion for chocolate chip pancakes as a child. All of my love to her, and her entire family. - Lydia (Maxwell) Nadal
