Obituary For Michael Denis Hogan

Michael Denis Hogan died Friday, August 19, 2022 in Raleigh at the age of 84. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the only child of Denis Michael Hogan and Hasalyn Russell Hogan. Mike attended DePauw University, where he received a BS in Math, and was a four year member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. It was at DePauw that he met Gayle McBride, and the two married upon graduation in 1960. They moved to Chapel Hill where Mike began his graduate studies. While at UNC-Chapel Hill Mike earned a Masters in Theoretical Statistics, a Masters of Public Health, and a Ph.D in biostatistics. After he completed his studies, Mike began working as a biostatistician for the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, and ended his 32-year career there as a senior manager. Mike and Gayle began their marriage in Chapel Hill, and upon retirement moved to Southport. They recently moved to Raleigh to be closer to their family.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, and his younger daughter Ellen Hogan Mininni. He is survived by his wife Gayle, daughter Kathy Hogan Moore, son-in-law Steve Wilson Moore, grandchildren Michael Alden Dowds and his wife Melissa Canady Dowds, Michelle Elizabeth Moore, Steve Alexander Moore and Nicholas Hogan Mininni, and his great granddaughter Denver Rose Dowds.

Mike’s smiling face, love for his family and friends, sense of humor and wonderful story-telling skills will be missed by all those who love him. A small private burial is being held, but the family welcomes friends and loved ones to a gathering at Renaissance Funeral Home at 7615 Six Forks Road in Raleigh, at 2:00 on Saturday August 27th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saving Grace.
