Obituary For J. Alan Barringer

J. Alan Barringer, 67, son of John Calvin & Mary Ruth Barringer, was born in Salisbury, NC on April 9, 1954. In his youth, Alan enjoyed participating in First United Church of Christ and Boy Scouting earning his Eagle Scout Award. Alan worked at Cannon Mills like his mother and father throughout high school to pay for college.

Alan graduated from East Rowan High School in 1972 and earned the Cannon Scholarship. Alan then graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1975. He went on to teach at and then graduate from Purdue University with a Masters of Electrical Engineering in 1976. While at Purdue, Alan earned his Pilot’s License and enjoyed flying throughout his twenties.

Alan enjoyed his career in electrical engineering becoming the Chief State Electrical Engineer & Chief State Electrical Inspector for the North Carolina Department of Insurance when the family moved to Raleigh in 1985. He also served with and as Chairman of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. Alan retired in 1996 and enjoyed home improvements, helping neighbors & family, and assisting his daughters with anything they needed.

Alan loved being on the lake, fishing, gardening, his cats, and fixing anything and everything in his shop. He is survived by his devoted wife of forty-two years, Jennie Barringer. He was a wonderful father to his daughters, Andrea Venus (Scott) of Davidson, Christine Heath (Travis) of Chapel Hill, and Sara Buchenberger (Daniel) of Raleigh. He cherished his five grandsons: Cole, Grant, Logan, Parker, and Nathan and one granddaughter, Avery, all of whom loved learning from their Papaw. Alan also leaves behind one brother, Kim Barringer and his family of Salisbury, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at North Raleigh United Methodist Church on Monday December 20, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with a Visitation to immediately follow. Internment will follow at a later date at North Raleigh United Methodist Columbarium.

In lieu of flower arrangements the family requests donations to North Raleigh United Methodist Church in Alan’s memory. Online Giving
