Obituary For Christopher Michael De Leon

Christopher De Leon passed away on 9 February 2023 at the age of 59 in North Carolina, USA. He was the son of Wilfred and Annette De Leon and was born on 21 February 1963 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, West Indies.

Christopher held an Associate’s Degree in Computer Studies and worked throughout the Caribbean region in the Information Technology and Air Transport Telecommunication industries. He had an inquisitive mind, kept current with the latest technologies and gadgets, and always ready to help family and friends with their new computers or other technical challenges. Christopher spent many an hour listening to shortwave radio as a hobby.

Christopher enjoyed sports and represented his alma mater, the St. Augustine Senior Secondary Comprehensive School, on the rugby team. He also played football (soccer), badminton and cricket in his youth. Christopher was a huge fan and supporter of the Liverpool Football Club, and seldom is there a photograph of him where he is not wearing a Liverpool football shirt. You knew you could count on Christopher for having the latest news on the Premier League, and not to plan any event for when a Liverpool match was on. At quieter times, Christopher was quick to extend an invitation and recruit others for a game of chess.

Christopher was a fun-loving guy and his many friends - who also knew him by his nickname, “Sam” – will remember him for his readiness to “lime” / hang out (where more often than not he would have a Heineken beer in his hand), for his jokes (usually a non-politically correct one delivered with a sly smile and a twinkle in his eye), and for his love of music (from Vivaldi to Bob Marley, but especially for his native calypso, soca and steel pan). It is Carnival time now in Trinidad, and on Carnival Monday you would have found Christopher out at J’ouvert in the morning and slowly chipping behind a music truck in the night.

Christopher will also be remembered for always having and caring for an animal companion – a dog / cat, a parrot / parakeet, and a lot of aquarium fish.

Christopher was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Annette. He is survived by his spouse, Tracey and son, Jerome. Christopher was the beloved brother of Sherrie-Ann and Torrance (Jennifer), and will be missed by his nephews, Shane and Curtis.

There was a picture of Christopher in the conference room at MIS (where we both worked in separate areas) for some award he had won. I secretly enjoyed whenever there was a meeting there (especially if he was off shift or not a participant) and would often arrive early, so I could take frequent sneak peeks at "him". We kept that picture when the office closed, and whenever I see it now, it brings back all the memories of falling in love in the early days, and I smile. Thanks for all the love, my dear.

Sam and I went to school together at St. Augustine. He was one of the boys but not the loud type. He spoke always respectful but was full of wit. I can't forget that full head of curly hair that was somewhat of his trademark. When I told my sister about his passing— she said— "The guy with the curly hair?" That was Chris.
