Obituary For William "Pete" Mutschler

William “Pete” Mutschler

Passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Pete was born on July 23, 1933 in Syracuse, New York. Graduating from Corning Free Academy in 1951, he was a member of the National Honor Society. “Packy” Pete, as he was known to his teammates, and to some by “Moose” captained the 1951 Corning Free Academy baseball team to the New York State Section 5 championship. Later, he played semi-pro baseball in the Corning area. He came from a line of baseball enthusiasts, which included his grandmother, Margaret “Nonnie” Mutschler, who was inducted into the Corning Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

Pete obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Syracuse University in 1955 and 1956. It was there that he met his own “band of brothers” at the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Surrounded by friends Ken Gilchrist and Pete DeMayo, amongst others, they enjoyed all things sports, ANYTHING SYRACUSE, and the occasional beer on the golf course.

Life long friendships cemented, Pete embarked on building a family with his Sigma Chi Sweetheart, Corky. He began working for IBM in 1956 in Endicott, New York. Thirty-four years and four children later, and after several executive assignments including personnel director and site administration manager at the Research Triangle Park, he retired in the heart of Dixie.

Pete was an avid runner, devoted father, history buff, music lover and die-hard Syracuse sports fan. When not enjoying retirement in Raleigh, Pete relished summer trips to his beloved Keuka Lake in upstate New York.

Pete is survived by his wife Barbara “Corky” Mutschler, his sister, Beth Wasson and brother Joe Blair, and four children: Lisa Karin Mutschler (Daniel Hayes) of Great Falls, Virginia, Kathleen Corcoran Mutschler-Watkins of Raleigh, North Carolina, Tomilynnell Harris (Thomas Harris) of South Riding, Virginia, and William Blair Mutschler of Austin, Texas and eight grandchildren: Jessica Lynn Hayes, John Douglas Watkins III, Jacqueline Leigh Hayes, Carolyn Blair Harris, Blair Egan Watkins, Katharine Corcoran Harris, Caroline Ruth Mutschler, and Julia Beth Mutschler.

He is also survived by special friends Steve Faircloth and Donna Cuddy.

Those wishing to remember Pete may make a donation to CareFirst Hospice, 3805 Meads Creek Rd Painted Post, NY 14870, or info@carefirstny.org

Corky, there will never be another you.

The family request the attire to be bright and relaxed.

Dear Corky and Family, My husband, Ed Dowdle, had such love and respect for Bill. He would speak of him during and after their IBM days describing the many stories of the fun they had. Bill was not only wonderful to Ed but wonderful to me as well. After Ed passed away Bill called me every April on Ed's Birthday to see how I was doing. It meant a lot to me. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely with love, Dorothy Dowdle 405 Robin Lane Vestal, NY 13850

Lisa - So sorry to learn of your dad's passing. I was recalling our years together on Drewry Lane and just happened across this announcement. I wish I had known sooner. My heart goes out to you and your family. Janet (Jan) Andrews Johnson

I have many fond memories of the time I worked with Bill at IBM. He had a unique wit and earned the respect of many people. I also had an opportunity to work with Corky years later and renewed the respect for him and his family. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was a special one of a kind man.

I remember the stories told by my parents about the fun a mischief that my Dad and Pete had as boys growing up in Corning. When my parents and Pete and Korky got together after much time apart the old stories would resurface. As times went on they remained great friends. Pete would always call my folks for birthdays and special occasions just to check in. I miss my parents and we will all miss Pete too.

My condolences, Mrs. Mutschler. I, too, am an SU alum and graduate degree, teacher, and Anything Orange (Football and Basketball). I've had to move to Raleigh. I'm looking to learn if there is an SU alum club here. I'm thinking you and your husband might well know of it. If this fits okay, {I hope it's not intrusive}, thank you for sharing. 919-896-7620.
