  Claire Gelfman

  Mark joined the Robertus Lab at UT Austin in the late 80s when I was a graduate student. He taught me everything I knew about transposons which helped to solidify my thesis project. He was a super hard worker and always fun to have around. I was very saddened to learn of his passing. Claire Gelfman

  Joseph O Falkinham

  Mark Cosby was my graduate student (M.S. Microbiology, August, 1984) successfully developing a microbial method to ensile alfalfa. His interest was in combining microbiology and agriculture and he certainly met that goal, in spite of the fact that neither he nor I started out knowing about preparing silage. We have kept in touch through the years, particularly with Christmas cards and Virginia Tech football success. His contributions to agriculture and microbiology put him at the top of any measure of applied science. I will always remember Mark as a cheerful and thoughtful investigator who was thorough and could operate successfully at the intersection of microbiology and agriculture.   Anna Hayworth

  Dr. Mark Cosby was a true character, he always had a story to tell. I enjoyed working with him at NCDA&CS in the livestock division and regaling the latest football scores after the weekend. He had a wealth of knowledge that was incredibly diverse and always shared the latest in 'chocolate news' with me, since he knew I had a sweet tooth. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He will be missed.

  I worked with Mark from 1999-2018. First at Biogaia Biologics where we endured an entire party in Swedish. We both lit up when the band finally played The Bellamy Bros. "Let Your Love Flow." The only thing we understood all night. Mark taught me how to change the oil in my Jeep while telling me stories about hitch hiking cross country and playing back up guitar to Johnny Paycheck. He was so proud when he bought his house and some of us helped him move. Ive never seen so many plants and grow lights in a private home. Mark and I then both ended up with NCDA for work and like many others I worked with him on environmental swabbings, sweating and making sure we were on the same sample number. May he rest in peace.

  I have such vivid, everlasting memories of Dr. Cosby while working with him at NCDA &CS! He was instrumental in teaching the proper techniques in environmental sampling to Food Regulatory Specialist, such as me! He inspired and became a mentor, as his microbiological expertise resonated throughout our department! I will always remember Dr. Cosby as a person who is ready to listen to whatever you have to say, brilliant in his responses, capable of accomplishing anything he sets his mind to and fun to work with even if the sampling numbers didnt always match up!   Chris Packer

  Mark was a friend and we both enjoyed going to the beach to fish in the fall. Our last trip was to the Outer Banks about 3 years ago. He enjoyed his job and was good at what he did. It is with sadness that I hear of his passing. I will miss his emails on food safety that he sent me and his previous coworkers. May he rest in peace!   We became friends because our lockers were near each other when we were on the wrestling team in Junior High. Wed listen to The Kinks and The Allman Brothers in his bedroom. He turned me on to John Hammond (who I later had a professional relationship) and Guy Clark (who once met). I played my first bar with Mark and many more after. I visited him when he was at VT and later when at NC State earning his PhD. He was in my wedding. He visited me when I lived in Atlanta. He asked if I was playing music much and said it was a travesty that I wasnt. We ended up on the Blind Willies stage that very night. As marriages, job changes, moves and children came to my life, we slipped apart. Mark has been important and part of his spirit always lives within me. Condolences to his family. He lived a powerful life.

  Judy

  It was obvious Mark had a wonderful sense of humor. He had a collection Monty Python and The Three Stooges paraphernalia in his office. Those alone speak volumes about his appreciation for comedy, in addition to being a dedicated Jerry Garcia fan. We spent time talking about memories from our misspent youth in the late 60's and early 70's. I was surprised he didn't make it to Woodstock because he had such a sense of adventure. He loved to fish, and of course, had several wonderful fishing stories to share with my husband. I enjoyed working with Dr. Cosby in the NCDA&CS Livestock Division. I learned a great deal from him while working on projects. He provided a wealth of information. He was a friend and a very special gentleman.
