Obituary For William Linwood "Bill" Capps
William L. “Bill” Capps of Raleigh, NC passed away on April 21, 2017 at the age of 73, succumbing to cancer.
Bill was a Belmount Abbey alumnus and worked for many years at Carolina Power & Light and Progress Energy as an accountant before enjoying his final ten years of life in retirement. Bill’s service in the Navy from 1961-1965 included crewing the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise, making him a proud “plank owner.” He was also honored as the “sailor of the year” during his service. He continued to serve as a member of the Navy Reserves for over a decade following his completion of active duty.
Those closest to Bill remember his humor, vitality, kindness, and generosity. He had the best laugh. He was a protective, loving, and devoted friend, husband, father, and grandfather. In his earlier years, he was a frequent participant in the Great Raleigh Road Race and although his running days were in the past he continued to be active at the gym until quite recently. He loved cars, boats, airplanes, and motorcycles, and had a passion for history. He valued his local Lakemont neighborhood and was a big part of its community – both as an advocate and a friendly face.
Bill is survived by a family who adored him: his wife of 46 years, Jean F. Capps; his children, Allen Capps and Stephanie L. Capps [Ben Brettell]; and his granddaughter, Maya Brettell. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
