Obituary For William John Hanley

William John Hanley
October 19, 1944 – May 8, 2025

William John Hanley, a decorated U.S. Army Major, dedicated educator, passionate train enthusiast, music lover, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the age of 80.

Born on October 19, 1944, in Joliet, Illinois, William was the son of William Milford Hanley and Helen Hanley (Himes), both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hanley.

William served his country with honor for 20 years in the United States Army, earning numerous accolades including the Bronze Star. He also served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Known for his leadership, discipline, and commitment, he retired with the rank of Major, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication.

Following his military career, William became a high school and college mathematics teacher. He was admired for his clarity of instruction, patience, and the personal care he brought to his classroom. He inspired many students through his love of problem-solving and education.

He spent 38 years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he raised his family and formed lifelong friendships, before moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2010.

William had a lifelong passion for music. He had an uncanny ability to find a song for every occasion, and nothing brought him more joy than sharing music with his family. He could often be found sitting at the kitchen counter, blaring a favorite tune, playing solitaire, or sharpening his mind with a Sudoku puzzle. These everyday moments—simple, joyful, and full of character—defined the heart of who he was.

A nationally recognized train enthusiast, William’s model train collection and knowledge of railroading earned him features in major publications and the admiration of the model railroading community. His passion reflected his attention to detail and deep appreciation for craftsmanship and history.

William is survived by his loving wife, Karen Hanley (Winberg); his daughters, Beth Hanley, Victoria Hanley, and Catherine Houchins (Hanley); and his cherished grandchildren, Abigail Comes, Ashley Houchins, Riley Dortch, Lauren Houchins, and William Hanley-Theriaque. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose presence, stories, and wisdom will be deeply missed.

A service to celebrate William’s life will be held on Friday, May 16th at 11:30 AM at Renaissance Funeral Home in Raleigh, North Carolina. All who knew and loved him are warmly invited to attend.

William John Hanley will be remembered for his generous spirit, sharp wit, love of music and trains, and a life lived with purpose, integrity, and joy. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he loved and the lives he touched.

I am sad to hear of Bills passing. I only knew bill through his passion for model railroading and the B&O. We need to spend more time listening to our elders. What they have learned and have to say can not be found in books, and sadly Bill's book is now closed. It would be my prayer to the family that he knew the Lord, that way, I will get to see him again.
