William (Bill) Spiess passed into the hereafter at the age of 89 years young. He will be remembered as a husband, father, grandpa, high school athlete, military veteran, DIY handyman who could fix anything, meticulous electrical engineer and steadfast provider.

William was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he played football in high school. Years later he was remembered by his coach as one of the most ferocious football players he had ever coached. William was also an exceptional athlete on the gymnastics team and sported an amazing muscular physique . . . which to this day leaves us in amazement looking at old black and white photos and saying, “Holy cow, that was grandpa?”

After high school, during the Korean War, William joined the Navy and valiantly served on the USS Oriskany Aircraft Carrier that was deployed in the Pacific Ocean. It was in this time that he had the opportunity to see much of the world and his experiences included being part of the USS Oriskany’s maiden voyage.

Always a proponent of education, William returned to school after the Navy, while working full time to support a family, and earned his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. His graduation pictures in his cap and gown are complete with wife by his side and two children in his arms. As three more children eventually came along, William spent the rest of his career working professionally as an Electrical Engineer and was valued in his field for his expertise and attention to detail.

With his passing, William joins his wife of nearly 70 years, Lynda, who passed just over 1 year ago. Throughout his life, he was a dependable provider and displayed an unyielding sense of commitment. It would be an accurate observation to characterize William as frugal, but it would be an injustice for one to not understand his frugality. William was a solid foundation and provider to multiple generations including wife, kids and even grandchildren. Through his life, he frequently went without himself as a means of providing for those who surrounded him. His wife, Lynda, was given to a more spontaneous and social personality. Consequently, to many in their inner circle, Bill & Lynda’s relationship was described as a sailing ship. Lynda was the wind that filled the sails and Bill was the keel that held them steady. A successful marriage is like a graceful sailing ship that survives both the calm waters as well as the storms of life. Now may the Lord’s grace shine upon them as they sail through the waves and the winds of eternity.

Survived by his children Sharon, Carol, Jonathan and Cynthia; grandchildren, Eric, Candice, Casie, Crosby and Joshua; and one living sibling, Vera Zimmerman.
