Obituary For William E. Carey

William E. Carey (Bill) died January 11, 2018 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born June 5, 1931, in the small central Pennsylvania coal mining town of Connerton.

Bill was the oldest of five children of William Carey Sr. and Elizabeth Rose McDonald. In 1937, at the age of six, Bill moved with his family to Frazier Street in southwest Philadelphia where he later graduated from West Catholic High School (1948). He also rowed crew for Penn AC and played and coached sandlot football with the Kingsessing Shamrocks.

Bill attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania on an academic scholarship; graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Three days later he married Margaret Theresa (Peg) Logan who survives him. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After attending Officer Candidate School and graduating as a Second Lieutenant, Bill was stationed at Quantico,VA; Jacksonville, FL; and with the Marine Helicopter Squadron 363 in El Toro, California. After an honorable discharge in December of 1954, Bill and Peg returned to Philadelphia where Bill began a 25-year career with IBM. Bill held various sales and marketing positions culminating in 1973 with his championing the development, marketing and sale of the Universal Product Code (UPC) scanning system which is now ubiquitous world-wide. Bill was then recruited by AT&T to develop sales marketing programming. He retired in 1996 as Vice-President of Product Marketing and Education. Bill and Peg spent the first two years of retirement in Colorado, skiing and playing golf. When they lived in North Carolina in the 1970's Peg earned her Master's degree in Education at UNC Chapel Hill where she developed a love for North Carolina that never waned. They moved back, first to Preston for ten years, and then to Cypress in Raleigh in 2008.

Bill is also survived by two sons; Bill, a retired United Steelworker staff representative and his wife, Dorreen, a retired environment manager from Gary, Indiana; Michael Patrick, the North American Economist for a French bank and his husband, David, a movie costume designer from Brooklyn, NY; and daughter Anna, a primary care physician from Burlington, VT and her partner, Harrison, an accountant from Maine. Bill has three grandchildren: Michael Emmett (Lora) of Chicago, Monroe Street of Brooklyn, NY; and Zack Ellenbogan (Roxy Valdez) of Seattle, WA. Bill's siblings are Edward Carey (Alice), Mary Elizabeth Unterkoffler, Barbara Jean Carey (wife of deceased Brother Frank) and Rosalie Hall (John).
