Obituary For Vonnie Bryan Smith

Vonnie Bryan Smith departed on September 30th to begin his journey into everlasting life. Our Brother and Savior, Christ, sent his angels to escort him into Heaven just prior to 11 pm.

Born on the heels of the Depression, the realities of life in rural Tarheel, NC, hardened and guided him to provide a better life for his family. Driven by this commitment and armed with self-reliant confidence, he used education to leave behind the environment that ultimately formed the foundation and fueled the motivation for all his achievements in life.

After earning three degrees at UNC Chapel Hill and serving his country aboard the SS Eldorado, Dr. Smith and his lovely wife, Tina, settled in Raleigh in 1962. His 33 year orthodontic practice filled him with delight and ranged from once treating a beleaguered bulldog to becoming a pioneer in the treatment of TMD. His professional success gave him the liberty to achieve his dream of building and providing for his blessed family of 6 children, 13 grand children, and 2 great grand children. We will miss Big Daddy and yet always persevere in his often stated joy, ââ?¬Å?I am the luckiest man on earth.ââ?¬Â?

With loving hearts, our family thanks the Cypress community for their tender support and reverence. We also owe a great debt of gratitude to Hospice of Wake County and their earthbound angels. In lieu of flowers, please forward any memorials to: The Pankey Institute, www.pankey.org or Wake Education Partnership, www.wakeedpartnership.org.

Our family looks forward to receiving our friends on Saturday, October 5th, between the hours of 1 and 5 pm, 8801 Cypress Lakes Drive, Raleigh, NC 27615.

I will always remember Dr.Smith, dancing and singing between the dental chairs putting the dozen or so kids at ease, allowing him work his magic in creating the most absolutely beautiful smiles. I am the recipient of his skillful administrations. What an exceptional human being!

Tina and Family, our hearts were broken this morning when Sam and Bill,s Hair Design gave us the message of Vonnie's death. Sammy met him 47 years ago. Thru his great orthodontic skills he gave Sammy a smile to be proud of thruout life. Every 3 weeks he shared valued wisdom with him. How proud he was of Tina, his children and his many friends. He was a mentor to many. We think of him and thank him every day. Our thoughts are with all of the family, Sammy and Nida

I was blessed as a teenager to have Dr. Smith as my orthadontist. I have the most beautiful smile because of his care. I am sure there are lots of Raleigh adults who owe their smiles to the care they received from Dr. Smith as children.I can still remember how I enjoyed going to his office because he was always so kind. My deepest consolences to the family.

I had the pleasure of working for this man for 13 years. He taught me more about orthodontics than any text book could but not only that he taught me about life. He was a very humble man and loved everyone around him and his family. I will alway's have a special place in my heart for the compassion that he had!! He will be missed by many!!!! RIP Dr. Vonnie

I was sorry to hear of Dr. Vonnie's passing. He was my orthodontist back around 1966-67 and I found him at all times charming, friendly and efficient. When I think of him I always hear him say, "Bite, darlin'." He will be missed.

Where do I begin to say all the wonderful things about Dr.Smith? I am a 60 year old woman who was one of his very first patients in downtown Raleigh! I think he was right out of school (UNC) and he was such a blessing to me. I had been in a car accident with my mom (seat belts weren't mandatory in cars at that time) and my front teeth were knocked out. My mouth was a mess, and Dr. Smith was a saint. He worked on me for years and straightened out the "Mess!" I ended up having three children who all had to have braces, and each one ended up going to Dr. Smith until his retirement! They too, loved Dr. smith! What a wonderful spirit he was, and always was so kind and loving to all that knew him! I am so sorry to not be able to attend his Wake on Saturday., but have a prior commitment out of town. Please know that I will have you all in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. Just remember what a true blessing he was to us all!

Smith Family, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband and father. Please know that you have the thoughts and prayers of a generation of folks with great teeth due to Dr. Smith. He was a singular man. He lit up the room and managed to make a large, awkward, frizzy haired pre-teen feel like a million bucks. He used to call me Muffingham McLovely! What a wonderful legacy you have to carry on.

So, so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Losing someone who has been an important part of our lives for so many years forces us to remember the good timesas our family learned after Dons leaving us two years ago. As everyone tells you, things with get betterthey do, but the void will always be there because they were important to us. God Bless! Sincerely, Faye Taylor

I am sorry for your loss, please accept my heartfelt sympathy. While you are preparing to lay your loved one to rest, to sleep for a little while in death(John 11:11), I hope you will find comfort in knowing that soon Jesus' promise of the resurrection will be fulfilled; when he will awaken those who are sleeping in death, restoring them back to life, to live eternally on the Paradise earth.-John 5:28,29; Luke 23:43. Until that blessed promise is fulfilled; may Jehovah God soothe your grieving hearts now and grant you peace and comfort.during this time of sorrow.-Matthew5:4.
