Obituary For Sue B. Belo
Sue Belo, 88, of Raleigh, passed away September 10, 2019, with her immediate family and beloved caregivers by her side.
She was born to the late A.J. (Jack) and ILA Brigman, in the town of Rockingham, NC. Sue graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1949, and worked as a florist before being introduced to her future husband, Julian, by his cousins.
She married the late Julian Banks Barnes, in 1952, living most of their 25 year marriage in Raleigh until his death in 1978. She met her second husband, the late Harry L. Belo, through his sister and then relocated to his home in Concord, NC, for another happy 20 plus year marriage, until his death in 2002. Sue is survived by her three children: Lewis Barnes, of Raleigh, NC; Mary Barnes [Lance Lipkus], of Leesburg, VA; and Julian Bruce Barnes [Kathy], of Raleigh, NC and two step-sons: Gordon Belo, of Concord, NC and Robert Belo [Carolin], of Wilmington, NC. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Monica, Tracey, Bradley and Lindsay Barnes; Duncan and David Belo; and Elizabeth Said. And her two great-grandchildren: Ferris and Cyrus Said.
During her husband Julian’s lifetime, Sue was a homemaker, garden club enthusiast, dedicated Bridge Club player and lifelong voracious reader. During her children’s early years she was a room mother, den mother and Girl Scout Leader. Sue later worked at Carolina Clipping Services before becoming a teaching assistant at Frankie Lemmon Preschool, where she remained until moving to Concord, NC, after remarrying. She and Harry were very active members of their church, Meals on Wheels volunteers, and avid antiquers. Upon Harry’s passing, she returned to Raleigh to be near her sons and grandchildren and for many years was active in the Moravian Church of Raleigh and their Flower Shuttle and Candle Tea. As her health declined, she transitioned to senior living before ultimately residing with her daughter, Mary, as her caregiver in Raleigh, NC. Sue was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. Her final years were spent enjoying her family, friends, aides and Scrabble.
The family will receive guests on Monday, September 16, 2019, at 11:30a.m. at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, with a 12 noon chapel service to follow. The burial will take place at 1:00p.m. at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, with food and laughter thereafter, at 4220 Rowan St. Raleigh, NC
