Obituary For Steven Grant Somers

Steven Grant Somers, 32, of Cary, NC, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.

A celebration of Steven’s life will be held at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) in Raleigh, NC at 2pm on Thursday, May 17.

A native of Winston-Salem, NC, Steven was the youngest son of Pamela M. Somers and the late Cecil G. Somers. He earned a BS in Statistics and a Masters in Analytics from North Carolina State University and worked as a software developer at SAS in Cary, NC since 2010. Steven was an avid runner, loved music and sports, and enjoyed craft beer with his many friends in the Raleigh/Cary area. He was a staunch NC State Wolfpack and Carolina Panthers fan.

Steven was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Grant Somers of Winston-Salem, and was the grandson of the late James and Eloise Murray of Reidsville, NC and the late Grant and Barbara Somers of Gibsonville, NC.

He is survived by his mother, Pamela M. Somers of Raleigh, brother David Somers and his wife, Brooke, nephew Camden and niece Morgan of Raleigh, and brother Adam Somers and his wife, Marianna, and niece Abigail of Massapequa Park, NY. He is also survived by loving cousins, aunts and uncles, and a host of special friends

The family will receive friends following the Celebration of Life service at St. Mark’s UMC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steven's memory to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center via the website’s donation page: https://tischbraintumorcenter.duke.edu

Everyone would be lucky to have a friend like Steven. Rarely have I come across a person who embodied the true fabrics of friendship--kindness, camaraderie, and compassion--as effortlessly as he did. The kind of person who kept an open door policy at his home where we grew up in Winston-Salem. The kind of person who you could pick up with right where you left off even if it had been months or years. The kind of person who when I asked if he wanted to do something goofy like join a Skee Ball League in Raleigh, treated it like a no-brainer. I am sure there are many fine things that Steven did in his life that none of us will ever no about, because he was the kind of person who did what was right, even if no one was looking. I am fortunate to have known him and to call him my friend.
