Obituary For Stephen John Schanz
Stephen John Schanz, a flight of intellect and wit, soared to his final destination on March 10, 2024, at the age of 71 in Raleigh, NC. Born in Kalamazoo, MI, on November 28, 1952, he charted a course that would lead him through a life of law, learning, and laughter.
After graduating from the prestigious cockpit of Pepperdine Law School and adding a few more stripes at Loyola University of Chicago, Stephen embarked on a career that combined the thrill of law with the joy of teaching at NC State University. He wasn't just any attorney; he was a jurisprudence juggler, a wizard of the legal world, and a beacon of wisdom to his students.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Stephen found in him an endless source of inspiration—his intellect and passion for life were no legal fiction. He leaves behind a loving family: his co-pilot in life, Nancy; daughter, Amy; his granddaughter, Paighton; son, Joseph; his youngest granddaughter, Rachel; his brothers, David and Tim; and his furry co-pilots, Sawyer and Josie. Pre-flight checks were completed by his parents, Albert and Colleen Schanz, who cleared the runway for his final departure.
Stephen's hobbies were more than just layovers; they were integral parts of his life's itinerary. Whether he was soaring through the skies, retreating to the tranquility of the cabin, savoring a robust brew during coffee with friends and outmaneuvering them in a battle of wits, enlightening minds in Olli classes, or maintaining his altitude with regular workouts at the AE Finley YMCA, Stephen embraced each day with gusto.
A devout attendee of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, he found solace and strength in his faith, which guided him through life's turbulent weather.
Join family and friends in commemorating Stephen's final takeoff on Friday, March 22, 2024, for a 10am Visitation and an 11am Funeral Mass at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, NC. It's promised to be a service that soars above the rest, in a place where his spirit can truly be free.
Stephen's legacy will continue to soar in the hearts of all who were cleared for takeoff by his teachings, love, and laughter. Tailwinds and blue skies, Steve. Your flight plan is complete, and what a journey it was.
