Obituary For Stacy Spencer Miller

A Celebration for Stacy Miller will be held Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St. Raleigh, NC 27605. A reception will immediately follow the service at the same location.

Mrs. Stacy Spencer Miller, 69, of Durham, North Carolina, died on December 30, 2018, due to complications from Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, a genetic condition causing lung disease. In spite of this health challenge that was diagnosed over 20 years ago, she lived a full life. She was the daughter of Thomas Spencer Meyer and Dorothy June (nee’ Spies) Meyer, born in 1949 in Toronto, Canada. She was raised in Chapel Hill, NC with her sister, Susan. Her love of Dance led her to receive a BFA in Dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Over her lifetime, she was proud to have been a member of the cast of The Lost Colony; a dance instructor at the North Carolina Governor’s School in Winston-Salem; a member of the Gerda Zimmerman Dance Ensemble in Charlotte, North Carolina; and a Certified InterPlay Leader. She was a lover of nature and creative expression, whether that be in the written word, spoken word, fiber art, visual art, or playing the banjo.

She worked as an Administrative Assistant for the UNC School of Nursing for ten years. She was a member of The Avatar Meher Baba Community, Off the Deep End InterPlay Performance Ensemble, Tapestry Weavers of The South, Triangle Weavers Guild, and Sisters of the Golden Thread.

Stacy married Kenneth Harper Miller on June 1, 1979. They made their home in Durham, N.C. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas. Her life will forever be cherished in the lives of her mother, Dorothy June Meyer; her children: Karina Miller Corey (James Russell) of Apex, NC; Tina Mendenhall Sneed (Robert “Chip”) of Huntersville, NC, Kristin Miller Bohne (Jeremy) of Anchorage Alaska; her grandchildren: Eleanor Elizabeth Corey, Camille Spencer Corey, Chipper Sneed, Samuel Sneed, Laura Elizabeth Sneed, Karoline Leighton Bohne, and Dalton Thomas Bohne; her sister, Susan Meyer Sinyai (Albert) of Asheville, NC; nieces, Ashley Sinyai Hathaway and Corey Sinyai Dingess; and great nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of devoted friends. I knew Stacy through our connection to the national organization for InterPlay - Body Wisdom. When I was president of the board I had asked Stacy to consider coming on the board because I knew of her talents and dedication to InterPlay. She declined for health reasons but she did whatever she could within the limitations of her health. She always demonstrated doing all the good that you can for as long as you can and I always admired her for that.

I call it Stacy's tree, a large oak where Stacy played and climbed as a child off of airport rd. and she went there to meditate, it was one of the largest trees in chapel hill. Sadly they cut it down to build an office complex. Stacy was horrified and sad about it. I thought of Stacy as my sister, she understood me and I loved her. Our last time together was a trip to Baba's center (I can't drive due to my legs so she drove). I always ran in to Ken and Stacy in Wellspring/Whole Foods, it was always joyous. Stacy was a close friend for almost 40 years. I am witness to how she had known grief in her life, and how, with courage, creative expression, and a gift for piercing any and all self-deceptions, she found healing and empowerment. She lived from her heart, and invited others to live likewise. I miss her greatly. On my wall hangs a small tapestry that she wove: a many-rayed golden star in a midnight blue sky, shining over the silhouette of an ancient city.
