Mr. Sloan Marvin Burton, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Sunrise Memory Care facility behind Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh. He was born in Belton, SC to the late Sloan and Mallie Burton. Mr. Burton’s wife, Marjorie Cato Burton, died one day earlier. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Selma (and M.F.) Driver; Frances (and Ed) Chapman; and Ellen (and James) Stephens, all of South Carolina.

He is survived by his three sons: Sloan Marvin Burton, Jr. of Raleigh; Dr. Philip D. Burton and wife, Janet Griesedieck of Zebulon; and Dr. David A. Burton and wife, Sharon Burton of Raleigh. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Neville C. Burton of Zebulon and Haley M. Burton of Raleigh.

Mr. Burton attended Clemson University and was a featured soloist for the Glee Club. He was a member of Highland United Methodist Church of Raleigh. Mr. Burton served in WWII in North Africa and Italy. He retired as the State Director of the Veterans Employment and Training Service, US Department of Labor, having been recognized as an outstanding Director in the nation in training and employment of veterans through coordination with the Employment Security Commission of NC. As such, he was recognized by Gov. Jim Martin with a presentation of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award. He also received national awards from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Assistant Secretary of Labor, and numerous other state awards from the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Vets, and Amvets. He founded the NC Veterans Council and served as its first Executive Secretary, which served as coordinating body of all the organizations to impact on the lives of veterans. He was Past State Commander of the DAV.

Memorial services for Mr. and Mrs. Burton will be held together on Friday, February 21, 2014 and begin at 11:30am at Raleigh Memorial Park at 7501 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh. Family and Friends will gather 30 minutes prior to the service.

Memorials may be sent, instead of flowers, to any of the veteran’s organizations, or to Hospice of Wake County.
