Obituary For Scott Alexander Harmer
Scott A. Harmer passed away on December 7, 2024 after a fighting battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He was born in Charleston, WV on June 24th, 1959, and was preceded in death by his parents, James A. Harmer and Betty Repass Harmer. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ann Barnes Harmer, four daughters, Caroline Newman (Ryan) of Raleigh, NC, Elizabeth Matthews (Charlie) of Knightdale, NC, Emily Childers (Miles) of Tallahassee, FL and Page Timms (Ricky) of Raleigh, NC. He was blessed by the arrival of five grandchildren, Mary-Norris, Sutton, Hardin, Gibbons and William. He also leaves behind his twin sister, Sarah Harmer Kingery (Joe) and nephew Ben, an Uncle, Dr. John Thomas and five cousins.
Scott graduated from Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, WV and West Virginia University in 1982. There, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and elected by the WVU student body to the Board of Directors.
After working for the American Tobacco Company in Durham, NC, he proudly spent a 29 year career in sales at UPS, representing the company throughout the US.
Over the years, many people knew Scott by simply calling him “Harmer”. It took Scott 30 years to return to his favorite place, that being West Virginia. He and Ann bought property on a trout stream and developed many great friendships in the community of Richwood. “Camp Harmer” was always the happy place and served them well. There were two things that everyone who knew Scott understood: His love of the West Virginia Mountaineers and his conservative yet compassionate positions on politics. He also liked bluegrass music, Turkey hunting, trout fishing and prior to health problems a good tennis player and a “duffer” of the great game of golf. Scott enjoyed motorcycles for most of his life and was a member of the loosely defined motorcycle group called the Wakefield Wild Hogs.
He was a long time member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, NC. Scott and his wife Ann left the church temporarily in order to help start Wakefield UMC in 2007. Seeing Gods hands work in that church was a true blessing to witness.
A memorial service is being planned for January. We will provide this information as soon as arrangements have been finalized.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to ALS Therapy Development Institute.
