Obituary For Samuel A. Holcomb
Samuel Albert Holcomb, age 89, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 31, 2025. He was born on February 15, 1935 in Piggott, Arkansas, to John Bordell Holcomb and Dorothy Louise Stallings.
Sam, as he was known by all who loved him, was many things to many people. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, veteran, teacher, leader, provider, and protector. With his no-nonsense attitude and warm heart, Sam made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His humor, patience, and care for others were evident in everything he did, and his commitment to his family and country was unwavering.
A proud son of small-town Arkansas, Sam received his education and went on to serve his country in the United States Army, where he earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel over the course of a distinguished 20+ year military career. He traveled the world and experienced much of what life had to offer, but it was his service to others and his deep commitment to the values of leadership and discipline that defined him. After retiring from the Army, Sam found a new calling as an educator, teaching ROTC at North Carolina State University and passing on his wisdom and experience to the next generation.
In his personal life, Sam was a passionate golfer, and one of his proudest moments came on July 26, 2001, when he scored a hole-in-one at Wake Forest Golf Club. He relished his time on the course, enjoying both the competition and camaraderie of the game.
Sam is survived by his wife, Linda Jo Wacker Holcomb. He is also survived by his brother and three sons, as well as five grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy of kindness, integrity, and strength.
A visitation to remember Sam's life will be held at Renaissance on February 17th from 11am to 1:00pm with Military Honors taking place at 1pm.
Sam's love for his family and his devotion to service will never be forgotten. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, laughter, and a profound impact on the many lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
