Obituary For Robin Griffith Glisson

Robin Glisson was born Robin Griffith on October 19, 1941, in Streator, Illinois. She grew up in the small farming community of McNabb, Illinois, where it seemed that everybody knew and liked everybody else. She was the daughter of a successful seed corn grower father and a schoolteacher mother. She had two brothers, one older, the other younger. She graduated high school and entered the University of Arizona in 1959, where she received a degree in anthropology with a minor in history. She was a good student and a member of Chi Omega sorority. Moving from tiny McNabb to Tucson must have been daunting, but she managed well and learned to love the Southwest.

While at the University of Arizona, Robin met her future husband, Til Glisson, who was in the Army and stationed at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, about 75 miles southeast of Tucson. They were married in McNabb in 1965.

Til and Robin moved to Dallas in 1967. Til worked for Texas Instruments while working on his PhD thesis research and Robin secured a job in the SMU library. Robin took maternity leave from her job in April, 1969. Their son, Jack, was born in May. Til completed his PhD and they moved to Raleigh in August, where Til began teaching at NCSU in September. They eventually bought a house in northwest Raleigh, which was then quite rural.

Robin kept house until Jack entered school. She thought it wise to develop some kind of employable skill in case anything happened to Til and she had to support herself and Jack. She chose computer science and enrolled in that program at NCSU. She sailed through the program, earning almost straight A's. Upon graduation, she was hired immediately by IBM, where she worked until retiring in 2007. Til had retired in 2002.

Robin and Til enjoyed retirement together and the time it gave them to spend with friends, dining together out and in, going to movies, plays, and simply socializing in their homes. Robin was artistically talented and took up stained-glass work. She made a great many stained-glass pieces and stepping stones, some of which she sold or gave to friends. She took art classes at Sertoma Art Center. She adopted a puppy, Banjo, that was rescued by Jack near his home in Creedmoor. She enjoyed walking, and took 2 mile walks weekdays and 3 to 4-mile walks on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. Her weekend walks were often with an NC State Ollie group or a friend she met while walking. She was often accompanied on the weekday walks by her beloved dog, Banjo. As Banjo aged, he became arthritic, and could not manage two-mile walks. Robin then would take a shorter walk with him in the neighborhood after her longer walk.

Robin succumbed to a brain tumor on March 7, 2023. She is survived by her older brother Kendall, her husband Til, her son Jack and his wife Emily. She is sorely missed.

I admired Robin greatly. She had the best smile and laugh. She was graceful and classy. I carved my first pumpkin with her, and I still make her wonderful Frosted Cream cookies every Christmas. I'm keeping her loved ones in my prayers. Sharon Loehr Daley

So sorry to have learned of Robin's passing. She will be greatly missed by the OLLI Trailblazers. She was a wonderful walking partner. I would always ask her what she was reading or if she had any book recommendations. She never steered us wrong. Our condolences to Til and the family. Ann and John Marucheck
