Obituary For Robert Jim Emerson Bates
Robert Jim Emerson Bates died June 23, 2014 at the age of 57. Jim was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Raised in Raleigh, North Carolina; Jim was an Eagle Scout and graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for several prestigious firms in the Washington, D.C. area until 2001 when he returned to Raleigh to help care for his father.
After returning to Raleigh, Jim discovered a passion for volunteering at local community theaters including Theatre in the Park and Raleigh Little Theatre, where he received an Al Wolfheimer Volunteer Award in 2004.
An avid Vegan, Jim worked for twelve years at Whole Foods Market where he made many friends, and pursued a passion for preparing healthy, delicious foods.
Jim loved music, camping, greyhound rescue, spending time in Oriental, NC and making new friends. He never met a stranger. He loved doing magic tricks and told terrible jokes. With Jim you never knew if it was a trick question.
Jim is predeceased by his father, Robert E. Bates and his mother, Helen Burrell Bates.
He is survived by his sister Betsy Bates if Raleigh, NC; his aunts Claire Ellen Burrell of Frederick, MD and Mary Lou Bates Chilcote of Attica, Ohio; cousins Marsha Burrell and Pam Jackson of Frederick, MD, Steve Burrell of Newport News, VA; Jill Carter Knuth of Stanford, CA, Diana Carter Baxter of Tomball, Texas; Mary Margaret Cunningham Brown of Grand Rapids, MI; Rebecca Cunningham O’Brien of Rockford, MI; Nancy Cunningham Grant of Royal Palm Beach, FL; Jess Cunningham of Grand Rapids, MI; Donna Bates Gray of Nashville, IN; Rodney Bates of Lincoln, NE; William Bates of Hilliard, OH; Christopher Bates of Santa Rose, CA; Kathy Bates Miller of Sandusky, OH; Charles Bates of Attica, OH; and Lucy Bates Spencer of Sandusky, OH.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 3:00pm at Renaissance Funeral Home with a Memorial Service following at 4:00pm.
