Obituary For Robert James Witman
Robert James Witman, born in 1941 in Harrisburg, PA, passed away Friday, July 3, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.
Robert retired from IBM as a Programming Service Manager and also retired from the US Post Office as a Service Technician. Prior to his career, he served in the Navy as an FT2, 2nd Class Petty Officer.
Robert will be most remembered for being a health enthusiast, avid gardener, playing pranks on his children, being a 'jokester', loving the beach, fishing for Sun fish at Falls Lake, his love for being outdoors, believing you should have at least 15 minutes in the sun every day, his interest in meeting new people and one of his favorite poems which he recited to his children 'IF' by Rudyard Kipling.
Robert is survived by his partner, Judy Witman; children, Denise Witman (Peyman), Clayton Witman (Priscilla), Lisa Meerdink (Cori); grandchildren, Jordan Maloney, Juliet Maloney, Melanie Witman and Lilly Witman; and sister, Dorothy Ann Givler. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Fredrick and Marie Catherine Witman.
The Burial will take place in the Green Burial section of Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, Wake Forest, NC. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Robert's family wishes to thank the Duke Hospice team for all the professional and supportive care they provided at all hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Robert James Witman to the Duke Cancer Institute Center for Prostate and Urologic Cancers. Hey You Bob, You left us all with out saying "See You Later" We were all sadden to learn of your passing on. We will all miss your heartfelt smile, your sense of humor, (which really confused me) the many refills of coffee you asked for at breakfast, the wonderful input to our group conversations and of course those scrumptious cherry tomatoes you shared with all of us. Our Lord has been waiting for you we just didn't know it. Rejoice in his Presence. Rest in Peace. We have been missing you for many Sundays and will continue to until we all meet again. Bob and I were both born in PA; I came from the Scranton area and he was from Harrisburg. I am so blessed that IBM brought us together in Raleigh in 1985 when I joined the VTAM Programming Service. He took me under his arm, got me on board and from then on he became my best friend. We did so many things together; fishing at Falls Lake, trips to the beach and mountains, helping each other on home projects, he even tried to teach me how to play golf. I will always remember our Thursday evening dinners for he would bring his favorite Chinese dish to my home and we would watch Jeopardy and see who got the most correct answers. For some reason, he won most of the time. He will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to Judy and the family. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. He can now rest in peace. I love and miss my father greatly. There are no words to describe my/ our sadness for his passing. I am happy for the years I had with him, although it doesnt seem enough time. His words of wisdom and his gardening help, I feel like I should be able to pick the phone up and call him or just go to his house for a hug and a kiss. He is always in my thoughts and dreams. ToThe Witman Family: My husband and I were so blessed to have known Bob. In the short amount of time we knew your Dad, I can say we really enjoyed each others friendship. Bob was a very delightful person to engage in conversation. His knowledge and humor were outstanding. May you all find comfort and strength in the memories he left with you. Bob was a coworker and good friend at the Raleigh Postal Processing Center. He was missed when he retired and will be more so now. Heartfelt condolences to his family. So sorry to hear of his passing. God Bless you all. Billy McLamb
