Obituary For Richard Martin Lieb, Sr.

Dick Lieb passed peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family on August 18, 2023.

He was 93 and lived a long and happy life. He is survived by his three children, Debbie Summers, Rick (Karen Spring), Jim (Eileen); four granddaughters, Alex Bozzelli (Nick), Kate, Elyse (Tom Kaufman) and Meghan (Charlie Naylor); two great grandchildren, Ella and Emmett; sister Carolyn Hebert (David); and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Joan and his parents, Fred and Lillian.

Dick grew up in Fairport, NY, helping his father at the Lieb Bakery. He attended Fairport HS where he played football, and was awarded the Michael L. Casey Scholarship to play football for the U of R. After college, Dick served in Korea as an Army Sergeant. Upon returning home he married his wife Joan of 43 years, whom he met in college. Dick began his career with The Burroughs Company before joining Champion Products which took the family to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. During his 30-year career with Champion, he was a member of the million-dollar and the two-million-dollar club. Dick continued to work part-time for the Cotton Exchange until he was 81. In October 2000, he was honored to be inducted into the University of Rochester’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Dick loved traveling with his wife and family, and enjoyed their shared passion for snow skiing. Later he and Joan became avid golfers. He was a wonderful father and role model to his three children. He coached his son’s little league baseball team and many other activities including encouraging his daughter to pursue her own sports ambitions. He was always there for his kids, especially during those challenging teen years in the crazy 70s! His family is very grateful that he provided such a beautiful place on Canandaigua Lake to spend their summers growing up. In 2020 Dick relocated to Raleigh, NC to be closer to his daughter and granddaughter. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and a great-grandfather and he will continue to live on through them.

The family will have a private service at a later date.

Jim, Eileen, Alex & Elyse--I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. The few times I got to meet him he was a sweet curmudgeon of a guy. From the stories Jim has told me over the years he sounds like he was a real treasure. Sending hugs to all of you....
