Obituary For Richard F. Godfrey

Richard (Dick) Floyd Godfrey, 92, of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of April 11, 2024.

Dick was born in Chicago, IL on July 5th, 1931, the son of Floyd Doan and Vera Marie Godfrey, twin brother of Robert Bruce Godfrey and younger brother of Eugene Harmon Godfrey.

Dick met the love of his life, Marjorie Ann Alfrey, in freshman year Spanish class while attending Lake Forest College in Lake Forest IL. After graduation, the couple married on June 18th, 1955, in Rockford, IL and moved to Quantico, VA where Dick began his service in the US Marine Corps. The Corps took Dick and Margie to the West Coast, stationing him at Camp Pendleton. After his Honorable Discharge from the Corps, the couple moved to Los Angeles where Dick began his long successful career with IBM. During his time with IBM, Dick and Margie were able to see the world, from LA to Poughkeepsie, NY, South America, Singapore and finally to Raleigh, NC in 1987.

Dick was passionate about the outdoors, including hiking, backpacking in both the US and Canadian Rockies and on the Appalachian Trail, animal photography and every gadget available. A designated Sharpshooter, Dick enjoyed spending time at the gun range well into his retirement.
Dick was also an avid traveler, taking his bride of 70 years around the globe and experiencing adventures too many to count.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marjorie Ann Godfrey, sister-in-law, Linda (Larry) Puckett of Rockford, IL, nephews, Lance (Michelle) Godfrey of Henderson, NV, Aaron (Deborah) Godfrey of Grand Junction, CO and nieces, Mia (Randal) Benson of West Fork, AR and Tracy Nunez of Bloomington, IL.

At Richard’s request, there will be no memorial service, instead please go outside for a walk with someone you love. In remembrance, the Godfrey family requests memorial gifts to the Sierra Club or the SPCA of Wake County.

Dick will be missed. He was inquisitive when it came to how things worked; always had a smile for family and friends; enjoyed the outdoors; and always seemed ready to find the humor in activities and ideas and would make me laugh. Dick has always been there for Marge. My condolences to the family, to Craig and Susan and especially, Marge. May you rest in peace! Sharon

I was so sad to hear of Dick's passing but he is now at peace singing & laughing, & dancing with his loved ones in heaven including grandma Alfrey & my sis. My CONDOLENCES to my Aunt, to my mother, those on Dick's side of the family, especially to those who took care of him, & to his dear friends over his lifetime. I am suffering many many regrets not getting to know my Uncle better. Spending time with him to discuss all of his beloved adventures, stories of him and my aunt, & just to gain knowledge for myself of how much he knew about life & traveling the world. Something I will have to live with. He had a truly blessed long, wonderful, fulfilling life along side with my aunt. My heart goes out to her. Hugs Aunt Margie, Tracy.
