Obituary For Richard Ernest Silvers

On June 5, 2016, Richard passed away at UNC hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Richard was born on October 6, 1947 in Asheville, NC. He was the first son of Harold Silver and Pauline Silver, formerly Pauline Bartlett. His twin brother Robert passed away in the hospital shortly after their birth. Both Richard and Robert were the only children given the last name “Silvers” rather than “Silver” by their parents – likely because Harold wrote “Silvers” on their birth certificates out of habit as a result of running “Silvers Auto Shop”.

Richard graduated from Erwin high school in 1966 and thereafter attended Appalachian State University. He later attended and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in University Studies. He loved to read and study almost everything he came across and particularly enjoyed history.

Richard served his country in the U.S. Army for 22 years and was a special operations officer for much of that time. He retired at the rank of Major in 1992.

Richard grew up with four brothers and was often lovingly referred to as the “white sheep” among the "four black sheep” of the family. He was well known to be a kind, generous, moral and selfless man that didn't judge others. He would give you the shirt off his back without you asking for it. The extent of his generosity and kindness had no bounds.

He was a true Saint on Earth who was completely devoted to his family and God. He loved making others happy and treasured his time in the Army.

Richard is survived by his two sons Scott and Jason, his daughter-in-law Jung Yi, granddaughters Kailey and London and his grandson Camden Richard Silvers. He is also survived by his brothers Gene, Gary, Dennis and Brent Silver.

My sincere condolence to Scott, Jason, and Suk. Richard was the finest example of how we should live a Christian life. It is a great blessing to have had him for a brother.

Richard was a fine man and a wonderful example of a true Southern gentleman. The world is a much poorer place without him. I'll always remember his easy-going ways and ready smile. Much love to you all. Charlene McKinney

Sending love and prayers for strength. I really got to know Richard one summer when he would come to my grandparent's (Charles and Louise Bartlett) house every day. He was nothing but kind, and I always loved hearing about his military service. Rest in Peace Richard. Amanda (Edwards) Lowe

To the Silvers Family, my thoughts & prayers to you all. Having known the Silvers family all my life from West Buncombe to Erwin I want to offer my condolences. I also want you to know that Richard probably planned or help plan the many classified missions I went on in Viet Nam because he was in Special Operations Command & they figured out were my 6 man Team was to go especially in areas were we weren't suppose to be. Special Operations in those days are Special Forces from all branches today. He is a true hero in my eyes & now knowing he served 22 yrs makes him a BIGGER HERO. To Gene, Gary, Dennis & to their cousins Ron, Terry & the late Mike Silver & their Mom I will keep both Silvers families in my prayers. RIP Richard!!!!! I pray you remember me when I get to Heaven & we talk about spending time @ your house on Saturdays.

Heaven has gained an angel... We were very sorry to hear of Richards passing, it's been a while, but we used to bump in to each other at the grocery store & would chat and catch up. Growing up he and his brothers were like the brothers I never had,,,I remember him having Brent and I run laps around the yard to see who had the best stamina...Brent won. Look forward to the glad reunion day. Our sympathy to the family. You will all be in our prayers. Much love, cousin James, Debby, Jesse & Becky Hembree
