Obituary For Ray Thomas Mohler

Ray Thomas Mohler, Jr. of Cary, North Carolina passed away on January 11, 2017 at the age of 77. He is survived by his loving wife Freddie of 53 years, his two daughters, Janet Eason and husband Brian, Kelly Nelson and husband Tom, four grandchildren, Danielle Eason (23), Alex Eason (20), Jake Nelson (16) and Gavin Nelson (14). Also, is survived by his brother Paul Mohler. He is predeceased by his parents Ray Thomas Mohler and Lanelle Palvado Mohler of Memphis, TN.

Ray had a long hard fight over the past 6 years from esophageal cancer. Ray attended Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, TN and Memphis State University. He served 4 years in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Louisiana and Alaska. He had a long sales career in the building materials industry in sales and business development and retired from James Hardie Building Products.

Ray had a true love of sports! He was an all star athlete in high school with a special gift in baseball. He continued playing in baseball leagues as a young adult. He was an avid golfer, loved snow skiing and enjoyed many trips out west. Dad was a huge NC State Wolfpack fan, but loved all ACC sports! Ray’s most respected and remarkable strengths were his deep faith, love of life, love of family & friends and involvement in church and the community.

Our family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the physicians and medical staff for the excellent treatment and medical care he received at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.

A visitation will be held on Monday, January 16th, 2017 from 4 – 6pm. A Funeral service will immediately follow starting at 6pm at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615. A private burial will take place at a later date in Jacksonville, NC at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Our friendship with Ray and Freddie was one of the greatest blessings of our life. Ray and I used to love to tease each other. It was impossible to know Ray and not love him. Freddie and I conspired to have our husbands meet and they were both better for it. Freddy will go on as she must, knowing she honored their marriage by her loving care and devotion. I take comfort in picturing Ray and all his loved ones who have gone before him sharing the joy of Heaven. Love you buddy

I will always remember Ray as a man with a perpetual twinkle in his eye, a man who loved to kid around and a man who enjoyed something as simple as watching my little poodle in a frenzy trying to chase the leaves falling from the trees on a windy day. Freddie, Janet & Kelly, Jennifer, Neil and I were so very sorry to hear of Ray's passing. We remember him so fondly from when we were neighbors. His warm personality and jovial nature was always nice to be around. I can remember Ray sitting out back smoking ribs and offering me his wisdom on how he made his wonderful ribs. I have to admit my favorite part was the 'tasters' he always gave me! I still use the barbecue sauce he introduced me to as well. We also remember how great he was with Neil. He always took time to talk with him and Neil really enjoyed that. Jennifer and I always loved how he would shake jingle bells outside the house at Christmas so Neil would know that Santa was nearby. We know Ray will be missed very greatly and our sympathies are with you at this difficult time.

Ray and I were friends since we attended Sacred Heart grade school. First grade to be exact. Worked together at four jobs the first being paperboys. Finished up at James Hardie Bldg Products. Loved him like a brother. Nancy and I will miss him very much but him being our best man in our wedding we have special memories of him. You can't count on many people in this old world but you could count on him. We are going to miss you so very much Ray. We love you buddy.

When I think about Ray and Freddie,I remember bringing my lunch box in their house on north star,they were watching me after school until our new house was finished in the 4th grade and it was full of frogs they got out and the Freddie and the girls freeked out and dad had a talk to me about girls and frogs.
