Raphael A. Levin, MD, was the son of Eastern European immigrants and was born to Louis and Minnie Levin in Philadelphia on July 26, 1914. The sixth of seven sons, six of whom survived to adulthood, he attended South Philadelphia High School for Boys and graduated with honors. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1935 and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1939. After an Internship at Allentown General Hospital and a brief time in private practice with some of his brothers, he served as Battalion Surgeon with the Third Infantry Division during World War II. He saw active combat in North Africa, Sicily and Italy where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. Later in the war, he was Train Commander and traveled across the United States delivering the sick and wounded to the veterans� facilities closest to their homes. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war and opened his own General Practice in Philadelphia and many years later relocated to Ventnor, New Jersey. He served on the Medical Staffs of Germantown Hospital and Einstein Medical Center for over 25 years and was a member of the AMA and the Pennsylvania and the New Jersey Medical Societies. He retired to Raleigh with his wife in 1987. Dr. Levin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Jacobs Levin; his son, Robert M. Levin, MD, of Belmont, Massachusetts; and his daughter and son-in-law, Mina L. Levin, MD, and Ronald P. Schwarz, MD, of Raleigh. He is also survived by his grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jonathan Schwarz and Shannon Murtagh of Seattle, Washington. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 12th, at 1:30 PM at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.
