Obituary For Ramaswami "Ram" Bashyam

Ram Bashyam was a uniquely kind and loving family man who had a great appreciation for his community.

Ram was born in India on December 14,1932. His career moved him from India to Germany and then to Canada a few years later. Ram married Seetha in 1969 and they had two children- Murali and Vidhya.

During most of that time, he worked as an engineer at Northern Telecom. He moved his family to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1980 and remained there the rest of his life. Outside of his profession, Ram loved photography and tennis, both of which he taught to his children.

Ram believed in people.

He valued every moment he could share with those he cared about. From the day he was born until the day he died on August 27, 2021, he gave joy to his parents, siblings, many nieces and nephews, spouse, children, grandson and anyone else who had the privilege of spending time with him. Whether friends or strangers, he would go out of his way to make their life better and be a positive member of his community.

Ram was a person who took great pride in his community. As a deeply religious individual, he was instrumental in the creation of Hindu temples in the Triangle area. His ever-present smile, his compassion towards others, and his vibrant personality will be greatly missed.

While we are saddened that he is no longer with us, we are at peace knowing he is reunited with his wife Seetha, who passed away on April 19, 2020.

Ram is survived by his children, Murali and Vidhya.

The family will be holding a simple ceremony on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at 10:00 am at Renaissance Funeral Home and Crematory, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC.

Murali & Vidhya, I was so sorry to hear about your father's passing. I worked with your dad for many years at Northern Telecom here in Raleigh. His obituary describes him exactly as I remember him. He was always a pleasure to be around, and I will miss him. Please let me know if you are unsure who to contact regarding your father's pension both in the US and Canada. Please accept our deepest sympathies. Murali and Vidya, We had known your parents from Canada when we worked together at Nortel. We moeved to Raleigh a few years after your family did. We had numerous get togethers where we discussed politics, religion, history, cooking, engineering, etc. Our younger son, Tarun was always impressed with Ram's engineering skills and called him "a real engineer". We were in frequent contact after we moved to Atlanta. He was energetic, passionate, knowledgable and always willing to help the community. He was a personification of his name - Bashyam - very direct and outspoken, never minced words. We all will miss him. We pray that his soul rest in peace and may God give you strength to bear this loss. Tilak, Kiran, Ashu, Tarun Sikri

Murali and Vidhya, my son just sent me your dad's information and I am sad to learn of his passing(and your mom's earlier). I remember so well your successful involvement in academics and tennis and how proud they both were of both of you. I am also sorry I can't make it to Raleigh today for his service but I hope to see both of you and your families in the near future. May God bless and comfort you during this time. ❤❤

I have had the pleasure of working with Ram Ji briefly in 2009 and have maintained contact with him since then. Just a couple of months ago, I was on a call with him talking about many things including politics, the pandemic situation, etc. I always remember his laugh and his quick-witted banter. I was lucky to know Ram ji, a great man, very sincere and honest soul. The community is going to miss him. God bless his soul and our prayers be with his family. - Raju Gadiraju

Murali and Vidhya, I have such fond memories of your Dad , your Mom and you in your junior tennis careers. You were a tennis family and getting to know you and your parents was one of the reasons that my job was so enjoyable. Thinking of you both as I remember your great Dad and his wonderful smile.
