Phyllis Yvonne Samuels (aka, Mama) was born July 27, 1930, to the late Deacon & Deaconess Clarence & Nina Jones. She was married to the late Billy F. Samuels, and from that marriage a beautiful daughter, Donna Maria Haddock (Samuels) was born.
Phyllis was educated in the Jersey City public school system and was the only one of her siblings to receive a high school diploma. She worked for Western Electric in New York City for a staff of attorneys who valued her as an exemplary employee and her excellent work ethics helped her to achieve a supervisory position at retirement.
Phyllis was a faithful servant of the Lord and was always filled with laughter and joy, especially with her children and extended family. She worked with her sister, Coraleasear Stenson to produce The Coraleasear Stenson Junior Cotillion which involved teaching children across all communities in Jersey City. The participants ranged in ages 3 to 18 and with a team of dedicated workers, she taught the children to sing, dance, and act. The lessons they learned gave them confidence in their abilities to be great in whatever they decided to do in life. Phyllis also served as the Mistress of Ceremonies during the Cotillion and was loving, encouraging and passionate about her participation. She was a faithful friend and inspired all who knew her. She attended Salem Baptist Church with her family and loved to sing in the choir. Phyllis was also a member of the Soul and Spirit Choir of Jersey City, NJ.
On August 1, 2023, at the age of 93 Phyllis was called home to be with her beloved husband, Billy Samuels, 7 devoted and loving brothers and sisters; Arlene Jones, Coraleasear Stenson, Lillian Moore, Barbara Martin, Donald Jones, Russell Jones and Clarence Jones Jr. She was also predeceased by a loving great-grandson, Cameron Samuels.
Phyllis also leaves to cherish in her memory and celebration of life her devoted and loving family members, daughter, Donna Maria Haddock; granddaughter, Crystal Samuels; grandson, Roy Haddock Jr.; great-grandson, Spencer Samuels; great-granddaughter, Peyton Haddock; great-great-grandchildren, Yisraela and Yisrael Samuels; and godchildren, Phyllis Harris-Wilson, Phyllis Martin (niece), Scott Phillips, and Amber White. She will be sorely missed by all, but we know she is resting comfortably in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
