Obituary For Phyllis Broutman Rosenbaum
Phyllis grew up in Ithaca, New York with parents, Louis and Evelyn Ackerman, and four siblings. She attended the University of Rochester, completing degrees of BS in nursing education and MS in nursing supervision. Her work career included staff nurse positions at the University of Rochester medical center, coordinator of orientation for new nursing personnel, and instructor in the state department sponsored program for exchange visitors, sharing “American nursing” with nurses from other countries. Prior to retirement as professor emeritus, she was on the nursing faculty at Monroe Community College for 16 years.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Donald, her children, Lisa Hotalen of Winston-Salem and Steve Broutman of Rochester, New York, stepchildren Renee Kneppar of Arnold, Maryland, and daughter-in-law Fran Rosenbaum of Yardley, Pennsylvania, and daughter-in-law, Tomi Rosenbaum, and their loving families, including nine grandchildren and a great-granddaughter and a great grandson.
Siblings, Phil Ackerman, predeceased, in Palm Beach, Florida, Robert Ackerman in Centereach, New York, Hermann Ackerman, predeceased, in San Diego, California and Cindy Harvill in North Richland Hills, Texas with their loving families. She is predeceased by husband, Leonard Broutman, stepsons, Mark Rosenbaum, Larry Rosenbaum and grandsons, Andy and Alex Rosenbaum.
She was an active member of Temple Beth Or. She was also an associate member of Temple Beth Am in Henrietta New York since 1963. Since relocating to Raleigh in 2002, she has been an active member of Newcomers Club of Raleigh, and since moving to the Cypress of Raleigh in 2008, has been an active participant in several activities. Dearest to her heart was the Book Club, and Health and Safety Committee. Phyllis read for Vision News, a weekly recorded program for the print impaired through Triangle Radio Reading Service. She was also an avid player of Mahjong for 50 years.
The family requests no flowers but donations to the Cypress Acorn Scholarship Fund.
