Obituary For Paul Wayne Plymate

Paul Wayne Plymate of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully on Feb. 19, 2017. He was born on June 27, 1922 in Indianapolis, IN. A lifelong resident of Indiana, he moved to Raleigh, NC in 2005 to be close to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He enjoyed his work as a bookbinder and then as a self-employed printer at Plymate Printing in Beech Grove, IN. Paul enjoyed woodworking, photography, bird watching and playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He belonged to the Master Gardener program in Indianapolis and worked alongside his wife, Virginia, at Garfield Park pruning and cleaning the gardens. He and Virginia also enjoyed the flowers in their home garden.

Paul and the family were members of Beech Grove United Methodist Church where he served as lay leader for many years. They later moved to Southport Presbyterian Church where Virginia worked as the church secretary. Paul contributed to the church with his carpentry skills and built several cabinets and hundreds of small crosses for the children.

Paul served in the Rainbow Division of the US Army during WWII. He was at the gates of Dachau when the prisoners from the camp were released. He buried those memories of the war for 50 years until the anniversary of D-day and he finally opened up and talked about his experiences.

Paul is survived by daughters Judy Tison and husband, Ken of Raleigh, NC and daughter Janet Kovalich of Dallas, PA. Grandchildren Susan Childs and husband, Rick of Raleigh; Laura Whitley and husband, Hank of Leland, NC; Richard Tison and wife, Anna, also of Raleigh. Great grandchildren Ricky, Cooper, Mary Brooks and Emma Childs; Judy Grace, Virginia Belle and Harper Whitley, Marion and Richard Oakley Tison.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Elizabeth, and son, Richard Wayne Plymate; his parents, Carold and Emma Plymate; his brother, John Plymate and sister Jane Plymate.

A service and visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Asbury United Methodist Church at 4 pm. Paul will be entombed at Washington Park East in Indianapolis, IN. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Asbury United Methodist Church, 6612 Creedmoor Rd. Raleigh, NC 27613
