Obituary For Patrick J Catena

Patrick Joseph Catena, age 85, passed away on September 16th at his home in Raleigh, NC surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 7th, 1927 in Newark, NJ to Frank and Mary Libertell Catena. Pat grew up in Newark, NJ and worked for ITT Corporation for 23 years at various locations in NJ and in Raleigh, NC. After retiring from ITT he worked at Walter Kidde in Wilson NC and for Saturn Cars of Raleigh. Pat married Mary Modaferi in 1949 in Bayonne, NJ. They were happily married for almost 63 years and lovingly raised two children. Pat was an exceptional dad always finding ways to make his children feel special and unique even through their adulthood. Over the course of his life Pat generously gave back to the community in many ways, including volunteering for over 30 years in police work, achieving the rank of Chief in the Clark, NJ Auxiliary Police. Additionally, as an avid NY Yankees baseball fan who played semi-pro baseball, Pat also enjoyed coaching baseball and softball teams, junior bowling teams and serving as a Boy Scout leader. As was his spirit, he would always coach and mentor with love, understanding, and fellowship as opposed to focusing on results. His love for meeting new people and engaging them with funny and often quirky stories provided him with many friends from all walks of life. Pat is survived by his wife Mary of Raleigh, NC; his children and their spouses, Frank and Joan Catena of Raleigh and Patricia and Brian Loy of Louisburg, NC, his sister Ann Catena of Bloomfield, NJ as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral mass is scheduled for 11 AM on Friday, September 21st at St Raphaelâ??s Church in Raleigh. After the service, a luncheon will follow at Alta Oakridge, 10820 Sandy Oak Lane, Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer research at http://www.jimmyv.org/
