Obituary For Norma Jean Flythe
Norma Jean Flythe (Clark), age 92, of Raleigh, NC, went home to be with her Lord & Savior on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.
Norma Jean was born and raised in Blackwell, OK to Charles Orville and Ola Bell Clark on January 5, 1929. She fondly recalled her days of living on a farm, preparing meals each day for farmhands, riding a horse to a one-room schoolhouse, and playing high school basketball.
She left her country roots and moved to New York City to become a fashion model and eventually a flight attendant for TWA on the DC-3. There she met NC native Jim Flythe, a handsome cadet at the US Merchant Marine Academy. They married in Kansas City, MO, on December 21, 1950, and settled in Raleigh where they raised two children, Jimmy and Pam.
Jean was involved for many years in the Raleigh area Christian Women’s Club. She accepted speaking engagements up and down the east coast, sharing her story of becoming a “born again” Christian, despite previously being considered a “pillar” in her church, depending on her own “good” works to get to heaven. She immersed herself in the study of God’s Word and became a gifted Bible teacher to many women in the community, desiring to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and make Him known by presenting the Bible message of salvation.
For many years, her passions were breeding and raising Persian cats, gardening, and snow skiing, which she also enjoyed with her husband, children, and grandchildren. Jean enjoyed fellowshipping at North Ridge Bible Chapel.
Left to cherish her memory are her son James T. “Jimmy” Flythe II and daughter-in-law Patrice; grandsons, James T. “Tripp” Flythe III (Heather), Christopher Flythe (Laura), George Flythe (Mary-Grace), and Chase Keough; great-grandchildren James T. “Drew” Flythe IV, Ella Flythe, Roman Flythe, Harper Flythe, Andrew Flythe, Cole Flythe, Addison Flythe, Lilly Flythe, Charlie Flythe, and Gunnar Flythe; nephew, Bill Flythe (Nona); and niece, Rebekah Flythe Watts (Kevin). Jean was predeceased by her husband, Jim; her daughter, Pam Flythe Keough; and her sister, Irene Crow.
The family would like to thank the staff at Falls River Village & Court and Rachel Hargis from Doctors Making House Calls for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Gideons International, PO Box 99557, Raleigh, NC 27624, and Word of Life Fellowship, PO Box 600, Schroon Lake, NY 12870.
The funeral will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, February 9 at North Ridge Bible Chapel, 7100 Harps Mill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615, with visitation at 1:00pm. Graveside service will follow at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
