Obituary For Neil John Berg Jr.

Neil John Berg, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on March 7, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 12, 1940, son of the late Neil John Berg, Sr. and Mabel Anderson Berg. He was known for his kindness and devotion to his family.

Neil received a BS degree in Chemistry from Portland State University and an MS degree in Physical Science from Oregon State University. He was a dedicated Public Health Civil Service member whose 30-year career as an Environmental Scientist with the Environmental Protection Agency earned him several PHS Citations for Exceptional Leadership, Special Achievement Awards, and an EPA Bronze Medal. Sharing a love of animals, in the years following his retirement from the EPA, Neil joined his wife of 58 years, Mardella, to work alongside her for an additional 15 years in their pet-sitting business, which led to some very special friendships. After retiring from their pet-sitting business, Neil enjoyed spending time in their beautiful sanctuary yard and relaxing by the pool with his family. His love of travel took he and Mardella on many shared adventures around the world. Neil was a devoted husband and father who shared everything he had to provide for those he loved. He had a tremendous work ethic and will be remembered for his dedication and unselfish spirit.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Neil John Berg Sr and Mabel Anderson Berg, his sister Margie Berg, and his son-in-law Russ Percenti.

Neil is survived by his beloved wife, Mardella Berg, and their children, Lara Percenti of Fuquay Varina, Brian Berg of Raleigh, Crystal Harris (Kirk) of Apex, Angela Weddle of Raleigh, and Jaymin Berg (Esther) of New York City; and his grandchildren Jake Weddle, Carson Weddle, Sean Harris, Tez Weddle, Logan Harris, and Rachel Percenti. Neil will be remembered in a private memorial service on Saturday, March 15, 2025. Flowers will be welcomed or donations may be made in Neil’s memory to Safe Haven Animal Shelter, 8431 Garvey Dr #137, Raleigh, NC 27616.

Neil will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
