Nancy M. Newton, 87, of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday evening, May 10, 2025 surrounded by her daughter and friends.

Nancy is survived by her cherished daughter, Julia L. Newton of Raleigh, NC. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Melvin F. Newton and her beloved son, Joel L. Newton.

Nancy was born in Raleigh at Mary Elizabeth Hospital to Wake C. Moore and Burma Wilson Moore. Nancy graduated from Millbrook High School in 1956 where she met her sweetheart, Melvin Newton. They married in June 1954 and were together for over 69 years. Nancy retired in 1997 after 30 years of service with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Nancy’s passion was her family and friends. She loved being a hostess and entertaining. Nancy had a talent for cooking, baking, needlepointing, and floral arranging from the many flowers in their gardens. She loved to decorate her home for every holiday and special event each year. Nancy and her husband enjoyed getting together annually with their mutual classmates from Millbrook High School as well as attending family reunions.

Nancy was very thoughtful of others and enjoyed writing and sending cards to many extended family members and friends throughout her lifetime. In particular, her most cherished correspondence began in 1947, and continued to 2024, with her fifth grade pen pal, Edith Landry of Helena, Montana.

Nancy had a gift for making others feel special, loved and important. She had an easy laugh that was infectious. Her kindness, compassion, sense of humor, and giving spirit will always be remembered by her family and friends.

In addition, to her daughter Julia, Nancy is survived by her oldest brother Donald W. Moore and wife Jane of Emerald Isle and many loved nieces and nephews from both the Moore and Newton families. Nancy was also preceded in death by her brother Jerry C. Moore and wife Jean Jones Moore.

A Funeral Service will be held Monday, May 19, 2025 at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615. Viewing and visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m.; Funeral Services will begin at 12 p.m. A reception will be held immediately following the service. All those who knew and loved Nancy are warmly invited to attend.
