Master Gunnery Sergeant (Retired) Michael “Mike” Gerard McGlynn suddenly passed away on August 18, 2021, in Atsugi, Japan. He was born on September 14t, 1958, in Manistee, Michigan.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Daisy McGlynn of Havelock, NC; and his son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Faith, of Raleigh, NC. He also leaves behind his mother, Jeannine; his sister, Molly; his four brothers, Joseph, Patrick, Timothy and Ryan, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
Mike was born and raised in Manistee, Michigan and graduated from Manistee High school, class of 1976. In 1978 he enlisted in the Marine Corps. Throughout his 30 year career with the Marine Corps, Mike was stationed in the US, Japan, Philippines, Italy, and Korea. Under the Bush administration, Mike was assigned to the Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) in May 2002. He retired from the Marine Corps on February 1st, 2009. After his retirement, he continued to work as a civilian for the Department of Defense (DOD).
Mike cherished all things outdoors. He had a passion for running, camping, hiking, fishing, boating…if the activity was outdoors, Mike was in. His passion for teaching and outdoor activities led him to become the District Commissioner of Croatan Trails District for the Boy Scouts of America. In 2012, Mike graduated Cum Laude with his Bachelors of Science degree in Aviation Technology with a minor in Business Management from Liberty University. In 2019, he obtained a Master of Arts in History from Liberty University.
A Memorial Service will begin on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615. Reception will follow immediately after.
