  SSGT Michael Salter

  I am heartbroken to learn minutes ago of the passing of "Gunny McGlynn". He was a character, one hell of a good dude, I sort of drove for him in Japan one night, and he was the one who brought Thor (the best rat dog ever) home. Pogue Mahone has reported to the pearly gates, and for sure he will sneak the rest of us in when we see him next.

  MGySgt Tony Petrucci (ret.)

  It is with great sadness that I learned of Mike's passing. He was the first one that reached out to me when I received my orders to "the building with the extra wall." He made liaison with landords for an apartment in Q-town and was invaluable in helping me get settled. We did many short jaunts in his boat on the weekend. Great Marine and will be missed by all that have been touched by him. Semper Fi Marine!

  Great job on Mike's Eulogy Robert. I have been thinking about all the ways Mike impacted my life. They were too numerous to count. I could always expect an adventure when Mike was leading the way. I am grateful to have known him.

  I noticed in the photo of Mike sailing that he has the JFK 50 miler jacket on. Spot on. It was mike that convinced me to run that race. And I convinced my brother Mark Meehan and we both convinced Ron Reuter. A great turn of events! Miss ya Mike.

  Mike was one of my best friends in high school. For a while after we graduated we were practically inseparable, working for the same company and rooming together as we traveled throughout MI, Alabama, and Florida. So many memories, most of them outdoors. Haven't seen much of him after he joined the marines and I went off to college, but every time I saw him that brotherly bond was as strong as ever, and the camaraderie between us hadn't changed. We had texted recently, teasing each other like we did as kids. He was supposed to be coming for a visit and seemed excited about spending time in his old stomping grounds. I was really looking forward to seeing him. We had a lot of catching up to do. Learning that he had bought a house nearby and was planning to spend a lot of time up here after he retired was like a promised gift, only to have it taken away. So full of life, always fun to be around. I appreciate seeing the comments here by others who have known him. In their words, I recognize the man I knew. What a crushing loss. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

  Lawrence Lafferty

  I met Mike in the early 80s and lucky to call him my friend. He was always an active, happy and searching for adventure. He carried green food coloring so we could drink green beer on St Paddy's Day. We worked together for many years. I was with him when he first met Daisy and I remember when Robert (Bert) was born. Robert was his greatest accomplishment. He would proudly talk about what Robert was doing or was going to do. He told me about his mother, his three brothers, his sister and their big get together on his property in Michigan. He was proud of his family. When he retired from the Corps, and started working at Cherry Point, we again got together and spent many days together out exploring near the Pamlico Sounds. Mike was the same active, happy guy in his twenties as he was the last day I saw him (never changed). We will miss your companionship and hopefully we will met together again in the next life.

  One of a kind. A true friend. Smart, cheerful and absolutely fun to be around. I will always remember the many runs, bike rides, camping trips and canoe trips that Mike and I (and some of you) took together. I've never known a person with a greater sense of adventure or with more curiosity about the world around him. A pretty good story teller, too. My condolences to the family. Allen Dedmon

  To Daisy and Robert, Michiyo and I send our deepest condolences and constant prayers for your loss. Mike has been my best friend for over three decades. We served together in many clime and place, and his absence will be difficult to accept for a very long time. But my memories of our adventures, hard times and good times, will forever be my best.   Dan McGlynn

  Mike is a cousin who shared the passion of family. My father and his dad were brothers. My brother, Robert, passed away at a young age like my dad. Mike has shown that family, especially if you're a McGlynn, is something take pride in. Though he lived far away he clearly welcomed family and friends into his world. His son, Robert, is a testament to this. I'll miss his wisdom and wit and will carry on his tradition of family. Your cousin Dan McGlynn

  Rory Meehan

  I had many Marines in my charge as the Avionics Division Officer through the years and I connected with only a few off duty and one of those was Mike. I got to know Mike while running the hills surrounding MCAS Iwakuni. Friday Five Peaks run, the Apple Run, and of course the Hagi Okan. Our running friendship continued in the states to include several Marine Corps marathons and the JFK 50 miler. Good times with a good man. Each time I lace up my running shoes and head onto trails, I'll think of you and miss your company. Thank you for making my running life a story to tell my grandchildren.   Major Mark Meehan, USMC (Retired)

  Mike was truly a special person. I got to know him very well through a lot of marathons and ultramarathons. He would spend a lot of time on those long runs passing on bits of wisdom and some other topics of current interest. My wife Lucy and I will miss his companionship when we were able to get together and want to pass our sympathy on to Daisy, Robert and Rachel. Sincerest condolences
