Obituary For Michael Joseph Johnson
Michael Joseph Johnson of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of November 9, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born October 2, 1954, in Gainesville, FL to Raymond and Mary Johnson, who both preceded him in death. One of nine children, he went on to attend the University of Florida where he obtained his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, the University of Kentucky for a Masters degree in physics, and Duke University for his Ph.D. in mathematics. His 30-year career with IBM moved him throughout the east coast. During his first move to Kentucky, he met his wife of 41 years, Sylvia (“Markie”). Shortly after, their two children Matthew and Barrett were born. He and his family then moved to Durham, NC, Endicott, NY, and finally Raleigh, NC where they settled down and lived for the past 28 years.
After retiring from IBM, he enjoyed teaching math for several years at both Meredith College as well as Durham Technical Community College. A natural and passionate educator, he genuinely cared for his students and worked late days and long hours even in his retirement to ensure their success. He took great pride in providing his students a welcoming and encouraging environment, and he received glowing praise in his evaluations for his kindness and dedication to them.
More than anything, Michael loved his family. After retiring, Michael and Sylvia spent much of their time traveling and visiting with all of their cherished family members.
Michael is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his two sons, Matthew (Megan) and Barrett (Dania); his grandchildren, Natalie, Reid, and Marcus; all eight of his siblings, Mimi, Sheryl, Ray (Willene), Susan, Bobby (Denise), Bill (Eva), Jimmy, and Rita (Bob); as well as many brothers and sisters in law, nieces, and nephews.
His grandchildren were the light of his life. An hour spent with Michael never passed without their mention. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and “Granddaddy.”
Michael and family were longtime parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raleigh, where a Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021 at 11:00 AM.
