Michael Brian Sweitzer, 48, of Charleston, SC, formerly of Cary, NC, passed away suddenly at his home on July 8, 2018.

Michael was born on January 23, 1970, in Johnson City, NY to David and Carolyn Sweitzer. The family moved to Cary, NC in 1977. After a time at Hargrave Military Academy, Michael graduated from Apex High School and attended Elon College. Michael graduated from North Carolina State University in 1995 with a B.S. in Natural Resources/Conservation, and pursued his Masters in Landscape Architecture.

Michael loved adventure real or virtual, whether it was riding his horse as a teenager, playing soccer, serving as camp counselor, rock or mountain climbing, canoeing, Disney World, video games, or sci-fi movies. He loved to make people laugh, and particularly loved his sons.

Michael is survived by Katie Miller, and their son, William Sweitzer, 3, and his son, Kohl Sweitzer, 14. He is also survived by his parents, David and Carolyn Sweitzer, sister Tiffany Bracco and her husband Michael Bracco, niece and nephew Melinda and Timothy Bracco, aunt Debra Havens, aunt Karen Reily, uncle Brian Kave, and several cousins.

A memorial will be held on Friday, July 27, 2018, at 7:00 PM at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations to the education of his sons may be made at https://www.gofundme.com/michael-sweitzer-memorial.

I will never forget the way he could infuse energy into a moment when you needed it most. It was 4am in the studio working on a project all night, Mike says I know what you need. All of a sudden one of my favorite pump up songs is reverberating off of his speakers Isla De Encanata by the Pixies. Rest In Peace my friend.

I worked with Michael for a mere two months in a grocery store deli. After he was transferred, he and I and a third friend paddled canoes on Lochmeres small lake for four months while Michael taught us some basic skills. We canoed in the rain, in the dark, on cold days, on spring days, and then took a river trip. Michael helped us get out of our ruts and do something extraordinary. He was kind, funny, insightful and daring. And he never seemed in a hurry, always willing to give his time. His gifts were creative, inspirational, and full of Gods beauty. He will be missed by all who loved him. We often talked about seeking adventure and joy. I expect Michael did find adventure and joy, especially with his young family. Im sorry that Michaels life was not a long one. I know, however, that he brought happiness to many along his journey. It seemed to me that he loved intentionally, extravagantly, and unconditionally. That is a good legacy. Rest In peace, my canoeing friend. Ill always be grateful for your time in my life.
