Obituary For Michael Ashley Bailey

Michael Ashley Bailey, age 63, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away after a protracted illness on May 16, 2018. He was born in Raleigh, NC, to the late Sylvester and Elizabeth (Everette) Bailey.

He first loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and we are rejoicing that he is in heaven and is no longer suffering. His family was most important to him, especially his beloved wife, Barbara, his daughter Michelle and her sweet little girls, as well as, Barbara’s children and numerous grandchildren.

He was at peace and most relaxed when playing golf, fishing, boating, or spending time with family and friends at his beloved Mariner’s Point.

Michael graduated from Millbrook High School where he was a member of the golf team. He received an Associates Degree from Louisburg College where he attended on a golf scholarship.

He had a long career working in the food warehousing/distribution industry eventually starting his own company, Express Foods Groups and Raleigh Cold Storage. He was so grateful for the numerous friends and employees who have supported him through the years.

Michael is survived by his wife Barbara Spangler Bailey; daughter, Michelle Bailey Lyerly (Chris) of Newland, NC; step-daughters, Angela Spangler Cummings (Mike) of Wake Forest, NC; and Michele Spangler Lineback of Wake Forest, NC; step-son, Scott Spangler (Kathy) of Wake Forest, NC; former daughter-in-law, Carol Spangler of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Daisy Lyerly, June Lyerly, and Wren Lyerly all of Newland, NC; Nick Cummings of Richmond, VA; Justin Shover (Chelsea) of Wake Forest, NC; Kelly Cummings Guzouskis (Ryan) of Youngsville, NC; Graham Shover and Tucker Cummings (Carley) both of Raleigh, NC; Braden Shover of Wake Forest, NC; Victoria Spangler and Gabeigh Spangler of Raleigh, NC; Averie Lineback, Cameron Lineback and Sabrynn Lineback all of Wake Forest, NC.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandson, Benjamin Cummings.

The family wishes to thank caregivers Lottie Harris, Shirley Harris, Edona Memini and Sharon Carter for their tireless devotion to Mike’s every need in his last many months. The family would also like to thank Transitions Hospice and specifically, social worker Jacque, nurses Joan and Kelly, for their loving, dedicated care. They were our families’ confidants and encouragers and we will be eternally grateful.

Family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 21, 2018 at Bayleaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bayleaf Church Road, Raleigh, North Carolina. A celebration of life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 21, 2018 at Bayleaf Baptist Church followed by a graveside service in the church cemetery.

Michael A Weaver

I first new Mike's father, Sylvester (Syl)Bailey, having worked with him for years at Southern Bell Telephone Company. It was only after I bought property at Mariners Point Condos in Salter Path, NC that I met Syl's son, Mike. It was like meeting Syl all over again when I met Mike. As with Syl, Mike never met a stranger. He enjoyed life and those around him to the fullest. A kind and caring person, Mike was always a great friend to everyone he met. As we boated and fished together for years, along with other friends at Mariners Point, we all grew very close. My daughters Kristen and Elizabeth, and his daughter, Michelle, grew up together running up and down the marina at Mariners Point. It was a wonderful time for all of us and Mike was very much a part of what made Mariners Point a very special place for us. For those fishing buddies of Mike, I suspect you'll never forget the infamous "Shark Bite" story we all laughed for hours about while fishing in the Abacos many years ago. It was true Mike Bailey and I laugh every time I think of it. Personally, I'll never forget the time he ran his boat hard aground in Bogue Sound, throwing me through the wooden cabin door as we came to an abrupt stop. Gathering myself among all of the teak splinters that were left of the once cabin door, I realized then that Mike Bailey ran hard and must of been more confident that I about his navigational skills. We did have some great times although quite dangerous now that I look back on them. As we all do Mike changed over time and his focus in life became different. In time, Mike developed a personal relationship with another great fisherman, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The passing of his best friend and father, Syl, marked a great change in his life. One that I don't think he expected would be so impactful, but one that ultimately set Mike on a course to find his relationship with Jesus. One that also set him on his path to ultimately find his soul mate, Barbara. B

My prayers go out to Mike's family. We were close friends in school and after....fishing and playing cards and Foosball! Many fun times and memories! The last time we spoke he was trying to get me to go fishing and we were going to set a date that we never got around to doing....We used to call Mike "Fresca" after the soft drink because he was so cool like the commercial that snow would fall when a bottle of Fresca would open!
