Obituary For Melanie Brown Ting
Melanie Brown Ting of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, January 4, 2018 after a valiant battle with breast cancer. She was born in Wilson, NC to the late Morris C. Brown Sr. and Carolyn D. Brown.
Melanie was raised in Raleigh, NC and graduated from Sanderson High School in 1974. She earned her bachelor’s degree in home economics in 1978 from Meredith College. During her studies at Meredith, she met her husband Shi Tien, a student at NC State. She taught at Cary Elementary School for 8 years before staying home to raise her two children.
One of Melanie’s greatest joys was being a mother to Amanda and Adam. She was always there to encourage and support them throughout their lives, providing them with her nurturing love and guidance. Later in life, she became a cherished “auntie” to many families at Grace Community Church. She loved her friends dearly and cherished those who were close to her. In the midst of her battle with cancer, Melanie still found space to love and care for others by sending cards and thoughtful gifts to her friends.
Melanie loved to sew, quilt and smock, creating beautiful children’s clothing and colorful quilts. She used her talents to contribute to charities by making blankets, crocheting baby hats and donating craft supplies. An animal lover since childhood, she adored her dogs and cats. Her furry “children” brought her much comfort while going through treatments over the years.
Melanie is survived by her husband of 37 years, Shi Tien Ting of Raleigh; her daughter, Amanda Ting of New York City; her son, Adam Ting and wife, Emily, of Raleigh; her mother, Carolyn D. Brown of Garner; brother, Morris Brown Jr. and family of Garner; brother Thomas Brown and family of Clayton; and by many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of long-time friends.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on January 27, 2018, at 10:00 AM at Celebration Church, 8700 Capital Blvd, Raleigh, NC 27616. The family requests guests wear a shade of green, Melanie’s favorite color, and bring a photo or memory of Melanie to share. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Grace Community Church, PO Box 1574, 242 Hwy 107N, Cashiers, NC 28717.
