Obituary For Mary Louise Madlon

Mary Louise Elizabeth Aliotta Ranieri Madlon, 91, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at home in hospice care as a result of complications from a fall and stroke. She has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.

Born on July 31, 1932, in Poughkeepsie, NY, Mary was a beacon of strength and resilience, weathering life’s challenges with grace and a steadfast spirit. She was the daughter of the late Emanuele and Rosa Toscano Aliotta, immigrants from Gela, Sicily. She attended Mt. Carmel School and Poughkeepsie H.S. In 1947, the family moved to Brooklyn, NY, where she graduated from Bay Ridge HS and Hunter College with a degree in art education, starting her first teaching job at Dewey Jr HS in Brooklyn. In 1957, she returned to Poughkeepsie and married the late James Ranieri (1972), the father of her five children. She taught elementary art in both the Hyde Park and Arlington School Districts.

In 1984, she married the late Eugene Madlon (2011). In 1989, they retired to Raleigh, NC to enjoy Duke Basketball games, the Raleigh symphony, and their local family and friends. They also enjoyed traveling across the country and visiting family outside of NC.

Mary was a member of the following organizations: Bay Ridge Alumni, Hunter Alumni, NYSTRA, Arlington Administrators, Raleigh Italian American Club, and AARP Chapter 3869 (President for several years).

She was predeceased by all her brothers and sisters: Lucia (Angelo) Cassarino, Josephine (Sal) Di Fede, Louis (Catherine) Aliotta, Concetta (Charles) Tandoi, Anna (Charles) Romeo, Guy Aliotta, Rose (Pat) Prince, Sarina (Phillip) Almieri. She was also predeceased by a stepdaughter Patricia (Robert) Moisuk.

She is survived by her five children: James (Frances) Ranieri of Raleigh, NC; Angela (John) Kochart of Schertz, TX; Patricia Ranieri of Wantagh, NY; John (Kelly Coscia Mana) Ranieri of Staten Island, NY; Thomas (Anne Wing) Ranieri of Rhinebeck, NY.

Her legacy lives on through her seven grandchildren: Christine (Darrick) Beckman of San Antonio, TX; James (Meghan) Ranieri of Raleigh, NC; Stephanie (Kevin) Treaccar of Sachse, TX; Anthony (Marissa) Ranieri of Raleigh, NC; Amanda (Troy) Wagoner of Frisco, TX; Thomas (Chelsea VanDeusen) Ranieri of Tivoli, NY; Olivia (Patrick Murphy) Ranieri of Charleston, SC., and fifteen great-grandchildren: Jack, Mary Claire, Joy, and Mollie Ranieri of Raleigh, NC; Penelope, Eleanor, and Benedict Beckman of San Antonio, TX; Kyle and Haley Treaccar of Sachse, TX; Josephine, Felicity, and Becket Ranieri of Raleigh, NC; Raelyn and Baby Boy Wagoner due Jan 2024 of Frisco, TX; Baby Boy Ranieri due Dec 2023 of Tivoli, NY, who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

In addition to her immediate family, Mary is survived by five stepchildren: Diane (Richard) Madlon-Kay of Minneapolis, MN; Betsy (Jerry) McGee of Weatherford, TX; Edward (Rosemary Pugliese) Madlon of Asheville, NC; Janice Miller of Hyde Park, NY; Paul (Tomoe Yamagata) Madlon of Shoreline, WA, eleven step grandchildren: Tom (Anne Burgdorf) Moisuk of Dallas, TX; Kaymo (Jordan) Timmons of St Johnsbury, VT; Aaron (Mihoski Yokoo) Madlon-Kay of Yokohama, Japan; Seth (Ashley Walker) Madlon-Kay of Hillsborough, NC; Andrew (Megan) Madlon of Durham, NC; Brian Madlon of Washington DC; Zachary Miller of Reston, VA; Rebecca Miller of Binghamton, NY; Eamon, Luka and Maya Madlon of Shoreline, WA and eight step great grandchildren: John, Hannah, Ruth, James Moisuk of Dallas, TX; Max, Lisa Yokoo of Yokohama, Japan; Juniper Walker Kay of Hillsborough, NC; Emerson Madlon of Durham, NC.

Mary is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, with special mention of June Zollo, who provided Mom unwavering support and care for several years in times of need.

As we bid farewell to a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother (Nonna), sister, aunt, cousin and friend, may we find comfort in the cherished memories we share. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27615, followed by visitation/fellowship with refreshments until 1:00 pm. (https://rfhr.com/obituaries/)

Interment of ashes will be on Monday, August 21 at 10:30 AM at St. Rafael the Archangel Catholic Church Columbarium in Raleigh, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Stroke Association or the American Heart Association.

    On behalf of the Raleigh/Wake County AARP Chapter #3689 we extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family during this very difficult time of bereavement. May comfort and peace prevail during this very difficult time. I had the opportunity to interact with Mary Madlon on a few occasions. She had such a gentle and sweet spirit always. She was definitely a precious jewel and she will truly be missed by so many.
