Mrs. Mary Mainwaring, 83, of Raleigh, North Carolina suddenly passed away on July 27th, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Havard Hankins and Megan (Davies). Mary was born January 21st 1941 in Tredegar, Wales, UK. She graduated from Keele University. She earned her master's degree at the University of Ottawa. She was married to John Mainwaring in Wales in July, 1964. They just celebrated their diamond (60th) wedding anniversary. They moved to Canada that year and then moved to the USA in 1985. Mary was a citizen of all three countries.

Mary was raised during the time of rationing in the UK, and learned to ride a bicycle and swim alongside her own children in Canada in the 1970s. Mary was involved with the Girl Guides (the second in a four-generation Guiding family). Mary lived by the Guiding law including "a Guide smiles and sings under difficult circumstances," and led Ranger Guides in Canada. She was an avid and very talented knitter and also practiced calligraphy, sewing, gardening, and music. Her career was in education, including adult literacy. She was a devoted member of the Church of England in Wales/ Anglican/ Episcopalian Church. She studied liturgy, and she taught many in Education for Ministry. She volunteered in many social justice causes and served as a Guardian ad Litem.

She was predeceased by her sister Enid Hankins of the Isle of Wight, UK. Her life will be forever cherished in the lives of her husband, John Mainwaring; children, Graham Mainwaring (Barbara) of Apex, NC and Megan Mainwaring (Rob Moir) of New Brunswick, Canada; grandchildren, Gordon and Alexis Mainwaring of Raleigh; Samuel, Gwyneth, and Toby Moir of New Brunswick; brothers, Rhys Hankins (Edith) and Glynn Hankins; and several siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm on Friday, August 2 at St John's Episcopal Church,834 Durham Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587, and it will be streamed for the inclusion of loved ones far away.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

    Mary was always educating. I asked her to knit fair isle sweater for my daughter. She asked,"Can you knit? Can you follow a graph?" Yes to both. "Then you can do it." I went on to knit 3 and enjoy it very much.
