Obituary For Martha C. Mullis

Martha C. Mullis

August 10, 1925 - May 29, 2023

Martha passed away after a brief illness at the age of 97. She is predeceased by beloved son William Davis, husband Hugh Mullis, parents Henry and Eva Cupp and seven siblings. She is survived by daughter, Cynthia and son-in-law, Barry Holloway, grandchildren Jennifer and Greg Royle, Jonathan and Jennifer Holloway, great grandchildren Talmadge Holloway, William Holloway and Grayson Royle, plus many nieces and nephews.

Over Martha’s lifetime she had deep relationships with six generations of family. GG, as she was called, loved her family dearly and treasured time spent together. She was accepting and loving, and made everyone who knew her feel special.

Martha attended Belmont High and Sacred Heart College in Belmont, NC, she was a voracious reader and a lifelong learner. Martha had many interests and several careers all with a key element of helping others--whether she was helping someone find a job at NC Employment Security Commission or helping someone buy their first home, she approached it as service to others.

Martha and Hugh retired to Carolina Shores to play golf and had great fun with old friends and new friends alike. Always creative, she had great enthusiasm for art as well as gardening, playing bridge, and walking the beach. In her last years, she relished telling the story of her “hole in one” on the golf course where she received a trophy almost as tall as she was. It stretched the imagination of her listeners, especially the most elderly.

Church was a big part of Martha’s young life and she had many happy memories of those days. As an adult, her faith journey led her to the Episcopal Church where her family followed. A service to celebrate Martha’s life will take place at Church of the Nativity, 8849 Ray Road, Raleigh, on June 10th, 11:00 am. Luncheon will follow at the Holloway home.
