Obituary For Margaret Martha Lewis

Margaret Martha Lewis passed away May 13, 2020 at the age of 96 years after living a long, happy life. To demonstrate Margaret’s longevity she has lived thru 16 presidents, 5 wars, the establishment of the Social Security Act, the moon landing, the invention of the television, and the first solo transatlantic flight. She saw lots of history and shared stories of how these events affected her life.

Margaret, who was very artistic, was a highly skilled quilter, seamstress and crafter. She spent hours working on her “projects” many of which were donated to organizations which she supported in Lakeland, Florida. Margaret was self-taught in multiple areas that she found interesting and she loved to read. She was very articulate and learned. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Additionally she was an active member in the churches she was affiliated often donating crafts, food and her time—whatever was needed. She traveled extensively, while she was able, to visit family—never missing an important event such as graduations, weddings and family reunions.

Margaret was born to the late Philemon and Bertha Ardell (nee Van Haver) on December 31, 1923, the eldest of seven children. Still surviving are Sylvia Reed, Jeannie Herrold and Eugene Ardeel. Deceased are George Ardeel (killed in action in Iwo Jima, WWII), Julia Wozniak and Dorothy Kalsow. Margaret bore three daughters, Michelle Chiles (deceased), Sharon Born (deceased) and Rebecca Allen. Margaret married the “love of her life,” Marion Lee (Speed) Lewis in the late 1970’s and relocated to Florida where she lived until relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2015.

Margaret is survived by her youngest daughter, Rebecca, of Lutz, Florida; her devoted son-in-law, Roger Chiles, who continued to care for her after Michelle’s death in 2018; 10 grandchildren which include Michelle's children: Laurie, Lisa and Katie; Sharon's children: Troy, Kim, Tim and Rick; and Rebecca's children: Matt, Carrie and Liz; 26 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by her earthly family and friends, but they are ecstatic that she has returned to her Heavenly Father and joined family members who have been waiting for her these many years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Transitions Hospice of Raleigh or the charity of your choice.

Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID19 and the desire to protect the health and safety of her loved ones, there will be no funeral services for Margaret at this time. Margaret will be interned with Speed in Lakeland, FL at a later date. If the situation changes, a memorial service may be planned at that time.
