Obituary For Louis Harley Coker

**Due to Covid restrictions, there is a limitation for attendance at the Funeral Service. In order to comply, the services will be for the immediate family and invited guests. Louis Harley Coker, 74, of Creedmoor, NC, died on July 13, 2020, at his home. He was born in Charleston, SC, on April 29, 1946, son of the late Robert Lebby Coker Sr. and Elizabeth Harley Coker. Louis grew up in Mount Pleasant, SC, where he attended Moultrie High School. He went on to Methodist University where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics in 1968. Louis married Mary Alice Rogers on July 5, 1969. Together they raised two wonderful children, Elliott and Alison. At the time of his death, Louis was employed as a Controller for Gilmore Global in Morrisville, NC. He worked there for over twenty years. He was a huge Carolina Hurricanes fan, and he very much enjoyed taking university courses in the Catholic faith and reading. He was an active member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish, including being a member of the RCIA team and a Journeyman. Additionally, he was an active member of the Padre Pio Fraternity of the National Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order and a Lecturer for the Knights of Columbus (council 9709). Louis was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Alice. He is survived by his son, Elliott (Meagan) Coker of Louisburg, NC; daughter, Alison (Mark) Hughes of Creedmoor, NC; eight grandchildren; twin brother, Robert L. Coker Jr. (Sylvia) of Mount Pleasant, SC; niece, Lauren Coker of Raleigh, NC; and cousin-in-law, Rosemary Hamre of Butner, NC.

The Liturgy of the Word will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi with a Graveside Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Creedmoor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Louis to Oak City Cares at https://oakcitycares.org/donate.

    My sincere condolences go to Louis and his family. I worked with him for almost 20 years at Gilmore Global and he enjoyed his job as Controller. I don't ever remember my paycheck being wrong during all those years. His sudden death was a shock and a blow to us at Gilmore. We miss him already. We were both from South Carolina and often reminisced about the culture and history of the state during lunchtime and after work - the chicken bog that is basically unheard of in North Carolina and hard to find in any restaurant here; our love for rice and the various ways to cook it; the best way to make and cook cornbread and salmon patties; the superstitions in the Low Country; the haints (ghosts), and the state's politics. Louis enjoyed cooking and often shared the many unique techniques he used and details he did to bring out the best flavors in dishes. His culinary knowledge, awareness of the restaurants in the Triangle area, and the best place to go for certain dishes sometimes made me wonder if he had ever considered becoming a gourmet chef. I'm praying that God's comfort will be with Elliott, Allison, and the entire family. Sincerely, Walter James III

    For the past several years, Louis and I met once or twice a month to go out for dinner and talk. The virus put an end to that. He did visit me this month for a short time to deliver some pictures. He was so active and had so many friends. At our Secular Franciscan Fraternity, he was particularly close to Davis Shick, Michael Hancock, Chris Peffley and myself. He was one who knew the word of God and responded with his actions. The response was often to the needs of others. He responded to the Secular Franciscan Fraternity and became their Treasurer; and cleared up a veritable mess: I have to mention the many free donations of printed materials he donated. His participation was superb in everything we have done. He also was active at St. Francis of Assisi church. joining the RCIA team for formation and sponsoring someone every year.; in fact, he took-line courses to become a certified Catechist in order to help others learn the teachings of the church. He also responded to the Knights of Columbus when asked and became their spiritual Lecturer. He responded and became a faithful Extraordinary Minister at church. He secretly helped individuals in need, too. He took time talk and listen to all he met. This was Louis forte. Who couldnt enjoy a good conversation with him! In all this, he never forgot the love for his late wife and family. He will be sadly missed by many people. May he rest in peace.

    Louis was a real gentleman and I so loved working with him. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, distance was the factor, but I did have the pleasure of sharing some pretty silly moments at work. Louis you will be missed my friend and co-worker.
