Obituary For Louis Albert Mitta

Louis Albert Mitta, 87 of Cary, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 2, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Amelia Notorangelo Mitta, his second wife Hendrica Wilhelmina Masseth, and brothers John and Leo (Lucy). Lou was born in Roxbury, MA, son of Pierino and Corrina Mitta and was raised in West Springfield, MA.

After graduating from high school he served in the navy, during the Korean conflict. After serving his country he completed his BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts, following with his master’s degree from Syracuse University. After working as a computer engineer for IBM for over 25 years, he finished his career designing the telecommunications network at UNC-Chapel Hill. He loved his sports, especially baseball and UNC basketball and prided himself with his daily exercise regime of swimming. Keeping up with his grandchildren’s activities and events was a priority in his life. Lou valued and maintained his relationships with his family in Torre Santa Maria, Italy. He was a man of high integrity and character. His faith and family were of utmost importance in his life. He will be greatly missed.

Family members celebrating and honoring his life include sisters-in-law Mary (Rocky) Lacertosa, and Helen Mitta, Shirley Notorangelo, brother-in-law Matthew Notorangelo; children, Deborah (Dave), Ave, Ken (Nancy), and Chris (Jill); grandchildren Amelia, John, Julia, Coulter, Anthony, and Sarah; the Masseth family, and many friends.

A special thanks to all the dedicated caregivers from Accessible Home Health Care, Transitions Hospice Care, and Perpetual Home Care who worked with “Mr. Lou” over the past several months.

Hello, My mother, Ann Upton, lived next door to Lou at Searstone until her death in August 2015. Their relationship started off rather slowly as she found him a bit crusty. But, it wasn't long before they developed quite a friendship. They tolerated each other's political leanings (I think they really enjoyed the reparte - always civil and witty. He was so good to her when she became weaker. He would bring up her newspaper every day and leave it outside her door. Then, he got worried about whether she could bend down to pick it up so he would put it on a bookshelf outside her door. Always the gentleman, he was. He often visited her when she moved to assisted living and cried when he realized she was dying. I checked in on him periodically but not recently and am so sorry that I did not know he was ill so that I could have visited. He was a good man. Marsha Munn, Raleigh

Caroline Filbert

Lou was a great guy, passionate, single minded and confident. He wanted to share his knowledge of Suduko and computers with his friends. He faithfully used the gym and pool to maintain his independence. He loved his family and friends. Lou wanted to be independent and stay in his home during this last illness. I'm so glad that he was able to do that. He will be missed.

I was sorry to hear of Lou's passing. A true friend to all, a colleague and friend of mine too who shared work with me in the same department at RTP in the mid-80s. I enjoyed our talks about baseball and our shared Italian heritage, my parents were born in Sicily. Always engaging, funny, a great sense of humor and although we only spent a couple of years working together, he's always on my mind when I watch UNC basketball and baseball games. We bought his house at 18 colburn dr in Poughkeepdie NY in 1964 and lived there for 20 yrs. Loved that home. Moved to Raleigh in 1984. I took care of Amy at Raleigh Community Hospital now Duke Raleigh.We sat behind Lou at St Raphael for a long time and then wondered where he went Then missed seeing him swimming at Healthtrax. Ray Glennon

Lou was a true gentleman. My family moved to Raleigh in January, 1965 and my mother, Margaret Glennon was one of the early locals hired by IBM. I believe she actually helped him with the typing of his thesis for Syracuse and they became lifelong friends. After my mom suffered a stroke in 2005 Lou would visit her at the Sunnybrook nursing home and it was a tremendous lift for her spirits. He dropped by every few months and I was able to form a friendship with him and am grateful for his kindness to my mother. He will certainly be missed.
