Obituary For Lori Jenkins Tolson

Lori Jenkins Tolson, 62, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on Friday, March 28th, 2025, at SECU Hospice House of Johnston Health after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Lori was an inspiration to all of us in the way she exemplified strength, courage and determination, inspiring all who knew her as she continued to make memories and cherish moments with her loved ones.

Lori was born on June 11, 1962, in Rocky Mount, NC, to the late Calvin Franklin Jenkins, Jr. and Violet Evangeline Turner Jenkins. A proud graduate of Rocky Mount High School, class of 1980, Lori worked at State Farm Insurance before stepping into the most rewarding role of her life—motherhood.

Lori’s greatest passion was her family and friends, and she loved spending time with them at home, during the holidays, at the beach, sporting events, and cheering for her beloved NC State Wolfpack. A lifelong advocate for fitness and sports, Lori taught aerobics and cycling in her younger years, led the initiative to establish the Endeavor Charter School athletic program and supported the Millbrook High School Football program. She was known for hosting vibrant tailgates at Carter-Finley Stadium before home NC State games and for her volunteer work with LiveStrong at the A.E. Finley YMCA in North Raleigh. Above all, Lori was dedicated to creating lasting memories and fostering a strong sense of community wherever she went.

Lori is survived by her devoted son, Cole Jenkins Tolson and his partner Behka Gojak of Raleigh; Cole’s father Ken Tolson; her loving sister Susan Woolard and her husband Tommy of Rocky Mount; her cherished nephew Brent Woolard and his wife Stephanie and their sons, Garrett and Gavin of Rolesville; and her cherished niece Amanda Woolard of Raleigh. Lori is also survived by her loving extended family including mother-in-law, Anne Tolson of Tarboro; sister-in-law, Andi Tolson Green and her husband, Michael (Hop) and their daughter, Anna of Tarboro; brother-in-law, Mike Tolson and his wife, Mandy and their son, Ethan of Crisp, along with many cousins and special friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 4th, 2025 at 1:00pm at the Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh NC with Caleb Batts and Alan Whitley officiating. The family will receive guests following the service.

Lori shared the motto “Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up!” with former NC State Men’s Basketball coach, Jim Valvano. Donations can be made in her honor to the Lori Jenkins Tolson Memorial Fund online or via check made payable to the V Foundation, Lori Jenkins Tolson Memorial, 14600 Weston Parkway, Cary NC 27513. In celebration of Lori’s deep love for NC State, flowers in red and white are also welcome.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Hope Uronis and her team at Duke University Hospital; Dr. Joshuva John and the dedicated 9th-floor staff at Duke University Hospital; SECU Hospice House of Johnston Health; and the many nurses and caregivers who showed tremendous kindness and compassion throughout Lori’s illness. They also thank the many family members, friends, and neighbors who stood by Lori’s side, providing love and support during this difficult time.

My wife JoAnn and I have known Lori since 1999 as we had shared seats next to Lori and Cole for NC State men's basketball since that time. We will miss her cheering on the Wolfpack and correcting the referees for their "bad calls ". Cole, may God bless you and comfort you during this time of grief and sorrow. Jim Locklear

Lori's impact on Endeavor Charter School is felt every season as athletes compete on the fields and courts in the athletic program she worked so hard to help establish. I send the love and condolences of all of Endeavor to Cole and family.

I got to meet Lori through her fur babies Rocky and Sadie. She always gave me a laugh especially with her giggle. The way she would say hi miss christine will continue to be played in my head. It was an honor to have her as my friend, a privilege to know her, and a blessing to become part of the family. I shall miss you Lori. Love and prayers.
