Mrs. Lilian Hernaez Sumner, 73, of Rougemont, NC, passed away on October 2, 2020 after battling heart disease. Lilian was born on May 9, 1947 in the Philippines in the city of Bacolod. She was the daughter of the late Amado and Amparo Hernaez.
Lilian graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the Philippines and immigrated to Durham County, North Carolina in 1978. She started her career in banking and later moved to administrative healthcare. She worked for the University of North Carolina for thirty years and happily retired in 2014, a life-long Tarheel fan.
Lilian married Tutti Moreno and had two wonderful children, her daughter, Sarita and son, Alex. Lilian later married Ray Sumner in 1983. They had a loving marriage and celebrated thirty-seven years last January. Ray and Lilian travelled the world as a couple and with family, with favorite locations throughout Europe. She enjoyed cooking, baking her famous pound cake, and brewing coffee that would keep most people up for days.
Lilian, known as Baby, was preceded in death by her parents and six older siblings (Lucretia, Lezita, Amado, Lydia, Adamson, and Lucille). Her life will forever be cherished.
She is survived by her husband, Ray, and her blended family in California: her daughter, Sarita Moreno, her son, "Alex Moreno and his wife Sherrie". and her grandson, Jacob Moreno. Her sweet nature and sense of humor touched the lives of many, and Lilian will be fondly remembered by her large extended family across the globe and precious close friends.
