Lawrence Michael Abrahams was born on October 17, 1934 in Asheville, NC and died on March 3, 2015 in Raleigh, NC. He was educated at Harvard University, receiving an A.B. cum laude in 1956 and at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, receiving an M.D. in 1961. His medical internship was at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, PA from 1961-62. He fulfilled a psychiatry residency and other training at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY and at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital , Boston, MA from 1962-67. He served as a staff psychiatrist at Taunton State Hospital, Taunton, MA from 1968-73.

Lawrence married Hanna den Hartog on July 5, 1969 at Concord, MA.

He was Chief of Psychiatry at Touro Infirmary, New Orleans, LA, from 1973-74 and staff psychiatrist at New Orleans Mental Health Center and V.A. Medical Center in New Orleans from 1974 until his retirement in 2001. He also retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was a member of the American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association.

Lawrence was an avid reader and lover of classical music and particularly liked watching Hanna sing in the New Orleans Symphony Chorus. He had a great passion for art and the stock market and enjoyed walking and socializing.

He was predeceased by his parents, Rolland Schwartz Abrahams and Johanna Lichtenfels Abrahams. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Hanna den Hartog Abrahams, his sister, Jane Abrahams Daroff, his brother, Sanders Long Abrahams, his niece Penny Abrahams Rogers, and his nephews, Charles Daroff II, Robert B. Daroff, Jr., William C. Daroff, Thomas J. Abrahams, and Steven L. Abrahams. He will be interred in Asheville, NC, as per his wish.
