Obituary For Laurence John Moore
Laurence John Moore, age 79, passed away on February 14, 2018 in Raleigh NC, due to complications from Dementia. He was born in Greeley, CO, on May 7, 1938 to the late John Harold Moore and Ruth Anderson (Matthews) Moore. Laurence was raised on a farm and graduated from High School in Ft. Morgan CO. He proudly served his country in the US Army. Laurence received his BA in Economics from Monmouth College in IL in 1962, while at Monmouth he was a member of the SigEp fraternity and the Octopus Club, which became a source of many fondly recounted stories. Laurence went on to continue his education at Arizona State University where he received his MS in Economics in 1965, and he earned his Ph.D. in Statistics & Operations Research from Arizona State in 1970. He was employed with Standard Oil in Chicago, Continental Ill Bank and finally retired in 2007 from the Virginia Tech College of Business where he taught for 37 years and served for part of that time as the department head of Management Science, earning a distinction as a Verizon Professor of Business Info Technology. Laurence enjoyed his retirement years traveling the country in a large RV, where he visited old friends and family. He was married from 1963-1995 to Nancy Murray, and from 2006 to 2018 to Ivy Hoy Moore. He is preceded in death by his sister Josephine Green. Laurence is survived by his daughter Julia Rebecca Sommer (NY), son John Andrew Moore (FL), daughter Stefani Ruth Miller (NC), sister Janice Garvey (WA), and grandchildren Madison and Tyler Miller (NC). Services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 3:00 pm at StoryChurch, 100 Pleasant Dr, Durham, NC, with a reception following in a private home. An additional commemoration gathering will be held in Blacksburg, VA on Monday, February 26.
