Obituary For Laura Marie Thompson

Laura Marie Thompson of Garner, North Carolina, died at Duke Raleigh Health in Raleigh, NC, on Sept. 6, 2020. Born March 15, 1981 in Concord, New Hampshire, she attended Concord High School and North Carolina State University, from which she graduated in 2003. She held a variety of jobs in sales and made North Carolina her home.

Laura was an exceptionally caring and generous person, known for going “overboard” on birthday gifts and for sending handmade cards and crafts to those she loved. She couldn’t turn her back on suffering of any kind and adopted many dogs and stray cats. She had a devoted circle of friends and gave herself without hesitation to anyone, animal or human, who needed help. An advocate and friend to those struggling with addiction, Laura took middle-of-the-night calls from hospital chaplains who needed someone to sit with a patient dying from an overdose or battling through detox. When her grandfather was dying, she dropped everything and flew to New Hampshire, where she stayed with him until he was gone.

She is survived by her parents, Dorothy Thompson of Yarmouth, Maine, and Gordon Thompson of Frisco, NC; her stepmother, Katherine White; her sister, Amy Halsted, and brother-in-law, Mark Halsted; two nephews, Teague and Cooper Halsted; a stepdaughter, Ashleigh Wolfe; and her partner, Jon Bush. She leaves behind her beloved dog, Bruiser, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A celebration of life will be held after the pandemic is over and people can gather safely. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA or your favorite animal rescue organization in her memory.

I've only known a Laura for a couple years but I did not know her well. What I can say about Laura is how inspiring she was. She could light up a room with her smile. She was compassionate and giving. She was always ready to help anyone. She will be deeply missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and her fur-baby.

Laura's words of understanding and encouragement helped me more than she could have known. Her generosity of spirit touched so many lives and her love and light will be terribly missed.
